Excerpt from California Notes, Vol. 1 These valleys are largest in the vicinity of the Bay of San Francisco and its tributaries. Here there is a break in the mountain chains. As the spurs from the north trend toward the bavs of Suisun, San Pablo, and San Francisco, they spread out like the fingers of a rocky hand. Between these giant digits lie some of the most picturesque valleys in the State. Among these may be mentioned Petaluma, Sonoma, Napa, Suisun and Vaca; while further north, where the fingers unite with the palm, Clear Lake, sur rounded by little valleys, reposes in the embrace of the mountains. South of the Bay of San Francisco, the two main ridges of the Coast mountains stand back from the bay, forming the fertile Santa Clara Valley. In Contra Costa County the Mount Diablo group is flanked on all sides by numerous productive valleys. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Offering a transdisciplinary journey across Thomas Pynchon’s California trilogy, “From Faraway California” addresses the representation of (city)space in the Crying of Lot 49, Vineland, and Inherent Vice through “geourban” lenses. Drawing on specific concepts in urban and regional studies, the book provides a thorough examination of Pynchon’s spatial imaginary, where the reader comes to understand how his fiction tackles the socio-political and cultural consequences of urban restructuring in the contemporary city and the lives of its citizens. Pynchon’s depiction of California is further analyzed from mythical and environmental standpoints to shed light on his planetary vision and (post)postmodernist poetics in the span of nearly half a century. More broadly, the book’s geocritical and urban analyses of Pynchon’s fiction indicate what might take place concerning the future of urbanism, toward “planetary urbanization” and the formation of the “city region.”

Excerpt from California Review, 1903, Vol. 1 It is possibly tedious to detail the acts of each successive Grand Parlor. Premising that each change has been effected by that body it will only be necessary to mention the principal amendments that have been made. The number of Grand Trustees, which was five in 1885, was made seven in 1886. The Junior Past Grand President was made a member of the board of officers in 1884. Prior to 1890 eleven applicants might petition for a charter. Now at least twenty names are requisite. After petitions had been de nied successively for charters for Tombstone, Ariz., Seattle, Tucson, Virginia City, and Reno, an amendment was adopted prohibit ing the granting of charters to applicants residing outside of California. Excerpt from History of California, Vol. 1 In the southern part of the state, near Los Angeles, there is a lake of asphalt, a trap which nature set for living creatures, which has been found to contain in a perfect state of preservation the largest collection of extinct animals and flying creatures of the Pleistocene age the world has ever seen. The flora of California is as remarkable as its fauna, and in its mountain ranges the Sierra Nevada is considered as forming the finest mountain system in the United States.
