Fairy-tale fantasy in a modern key, with some classic hints, "The King of Light, the Order of the Dark Gods" is a novel that combines the intimate notes of the delicate love story between the protagonists: Fedrick and Isabel. The story of the young crusader leads the reader through evocative atmospheres, enchanted places, and unique and particular characters to a Turin as coveted as it is mysterious. This will lead Fedrick to understand that all areas of that world are governed by the Order of the Dark Gods and that what he wants will be part of an ever-bigger and more difficult plan to manage. A story full of unexpected events, unpredictable and always dynamic, through a totally new world to discover.

A mighty Crusader in Palestine, beholden to his love Isabel back home in Turin, curious Fedrick begins a remarkable journey into the unknown world of the Dark Gods. His world is quite literally turned inside-out after a chance nighttime encounter in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, leading Fedrick into a magical world full of talking animals, secret communities, fascinating characters, and an electrifying, twisting plot diverted by a series of grand mysteries and dark magic. Fedrick's dangerous adventures lead him into action-filled battles with evil monarchs and magical friends in the parallel universe in which he finds himself, driven always by his desire to reach Isabel in Turin. However, the path to Turin is even more difficult and mysterious than Fedrick can imagine--a treacherous and ill-advised mission into the capital of the Forbidden Empire itself! Can Fedrick be reunited with his true love, Isabel, and outsmart the oppressive Dark Gods along the way, or will tragedy strike this fearless hero as he attempts to battle evil and bring freedom back to this magical world? Fedrick's adventures force him to grapple with diamond dragons, powerful hidden forces, and wicked curses, as well as an ever-surprising cast of eccentric characters in an extraordinary foreign universe.

“Evokes the sights and sounds of the ancient world with daring and imagination… An intellectual tour-de-force that challenges us to see the history of Christianity through the eyes of those who actually lived it.”—Los Angeles Times In this provocative, irresistibly entertaining book, Keith Hopkins takes readers back in time to explore the roots of Christianity in ancient Rome. Combining exacting scholarship with dazzling invention, Hopkins challenges our perceptions about religion, the historical Jesus, and the way history is written. He puts us in touch with what he calls "empathetic wonder"—imagining what Romans, pagans, Jews, and Christians thought, felt, experienced, and believed-by employing a series of engaging literary devices. These include a TV drama about the Dead Sea Scrolls; the first-person testimony of a pair of time-travelers to Pompeii; a meditation on Jesus' apocryphal twin brother; and an unusual letter on God, demons, and angels.

In the nine deep hell of the underworld, a purple demon moon with a faint brilliance hangs high above the cloudy sky full of blood. The lavender moonlight shines on the spirit of the nine ghosts, but it doesn't feel a little gentle at all. Instead, it is a burst of deep cold that makes the soul tremble.

"The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD marked the beginning of a new era in Christianity. For the first time, doctrines were organized into a single creed. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers did most of their writing during and after this important event in Church history. Unlike the previous era of Christian writing, the Nicene and Post-Nicene era is dominated by a few very important and prolific writers. In Volume IV of the 14-volume collected writings of the Nicenes and Post-Nicenes (first published between 1886 and 1889), readers will find Augustines writings defending the Catholic church against the Manichaeans and the Donatists. Manichaeanism was a religion developed in Persia by the prophet Mani. According to this religion, creation has two parts: darkness and light. Light is God and has ten attributes. Opposing this, and coeternal with it, is darkness and its five attributes. Saint Augustine was originally a Manichaean, so his defense of Christianity against this religion comes from a deep understanding of its nature. Donatists were a group of believers who refused to forgive those who had renounced their faith during a time of persecution, which caused a schism in Christianity. In opposing these men, Augustine attempted to mend the rift. Those with an interest in ancient religions will find Augustines writings on Manichaeanism one of the most important historical records of that religions practices."
