Willard Gibbs 'on the Equilib tium of Heterogeneous Substances. All chemists now know, how, in this memoir, the illustrious New Haven professor has deduced from the principles of thermodynamics the equations which represent the states of equilibrium of all chemical sys tems; all know, under the name of the phase rule, ' the weighty theorems which he has found through comparing the number of unknown quantities to be determined, with the num ber of independent equations subsisting among them. The labors of H. W. Bakhuis Roozeboom and of his pupils have illustrated the bearing of the phase rule, in applying it to the discussion of a host of complex chemical reactions; and the special treatises of W. Meyerhof'fer3 and of Wilder D. Bancroft4 have assembled under it the chief problems of chemical me chanics. Excerpt from The Journal of Physical Chemistry, 1896-1897, Vol. 1 In all cases the maximum reading of the electromotive force of the cell was taken, for all the cells measured were found to increase rather quickly to a maximum, which remained constant for a time. Most of the cells reached a maximum reading in about an hour, while some of the cells, especially the sulphate cells, might require two or three hours. In a few cases the maximum was reached in fifteen or twenty minutes. However, the time for any particular cell was not in the least constant. Throughout this whole paper twentieth normal solutions are always used when no concentration is specified. Excerpt from The Journal of Biological Chemistry, 1907, Vol. 2 I have thought it worth while to bring together here a number of observations relating to bacterial processes in the intestinal tracts of persons suffering from severe forms of anaemia, in the belief that they afford a clue to the etiology of many cases of advanced blood disease that are ordinarily described as "primary." Most of the instances which form the basis of this study have given the blood-picture of so-called idiopathic, pernicious anaemia. The observations relate especially to seventeen cases of anaemia. Of these nine showed those changes in the morphology of the red cells (including the presence of megaloblastic forms) which are regarded as most characteristic of primary pernicious anaemia (Cases I, III, V, VII, VIII, X, XII, XIII, XVII). In four other cases (Cases II, IV, VI, and IX) the diagnosis of pernicious anaemia was made but appears less certain as megaloblasts were not seen. Of the remaining four cases one is an adult from whose history and blood-picture a distinguished consultant leaned to the diagnosis of pernicious anaemia, while another practitioner, upon the same evidence, suspected that he was dealing with an anaemia secondary to gastric carcinoma (XV). Another case is one of severe anaemia which was regarded as secondary, but for which no explanation could be found at autopsy (Case XI). Another case is that of a young child in the care of Dr. Holt, whose history is especially instructive as showing the rapidity of the process of blood regeneration upon the subsidence of a subacute intestinal process to which the anaemia was apparently secondary (Case XVI).
