Excerpt from The Journal of Ophthalmology, Otology and Laryngology, 1894, Vol. 6 This writer says he is not prepared. To give an Opinion upon homatropine, but speaking of two of his colleagues who had used it says that while one claimed that it only partially paralyzed the accommodation, and that he had abandoned its use, the other said it fully paralyzed the accommodation, and that he used nothing else in refraction work. Excerpt from The Journal of Ophthalmology, Otology and Laryngology, 1900, Vol. 12: Issued Quarterly HE Development of Hearing is a phrase that may often be found in the advertisements of Teachers of the Deaf, yet it is one which seems to be decidedly misleading. It has been gravely stated that by means of a daily drill Of from thirty to sixty minutes for the space of three months, a certain class were able to recognize words and sentences spoken across the room; and frequently I [the teacher] stood in the hall, having the door slightly ajar, and spoke sentences which they heard and re peated. Now, the class'here spoken of were not simply hard-oi-hearing pupils, but were children being educated in one of the largest deaf-and-dumb institutions in the United States. The speaker goes on to say: As to what takes place in a scientific point of view - whether the audi tory nerve develops as a muscle develops by use, or whether there is simply an education of the partial hearing, or both, I do not now discuss. This much I will say, however, that the sense of hearing which has lain dormant and useless up to 'this time is now sufficiently developed to be of great bene fit to these children; and nobody is more conscious of it than they themselves. They know that heretofore they heard not and that now they do hear. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
