Excerpt from Eminent French Surgeons, With a Historical and Statistical Account of the Hospitals of Paris: Together With Miscellaneous Information and Biographical Notices of the Most Eminent Living Parisian Surgeons The notes from which the following pages have been drawn up, were collected by the author during a residence of several years in France, with the view of publishing, on his return to this country, a condensed account of the numerous and interesting hospitals and medical institutions with which the city of Paris abounds, to which it was intended to add such general information as should make the volume a useful manual, or students' guide, for such of his young countrymen as might be disposed to visit that city for the purpose of completing their professional education. It will be perceived that this original plan has been adhered to; the work, however, has been increased to nearly four times the size that was at first intended, in consequence of the addition to the first part of much matter which was not to have been included in the manual or guide, and of the whole of the second part, or lives of the surgeons. In the form in which it is now presented, it is hoped that the present work will be found interesting to the general reader, as well as a useful guide and reference for the professional one.
