Hopper dredges are designed to vacuum material from the sea floor through drag arms that load the material into the hold of the vessel. The cargo of mud, or sand, can then be transported to either an ocean disposal site, where the material is dropped to the bottom through openings in the bottom of the hull, or at an upland site such as a beach, or reclamation, where the material is pumped ashore by the ship. This method is most suited when excavating loose material from open areas for delivery to a distant disposal location. These vessels are generally certified to sail in coastal or ocean waters and are suited for working in rougher sea conditions beyond those suitable for other dredging plants.

A sharp and entertaining essay collection about the importance of multiple forms of love and friendship in a world designed for couples, from a laser-precise new voice. Sometimes it seems like there are two American creeds, self-reliance and marriage, and neither of them is mine. I experience myself as someone formed and sustained by others' love and patience, by student loans and stipends, by the kindness of strangers. Briallen Hopper's Hard to Love honors the categories of loves and relationships beyond marriage, the ones that are often treated as invisible or seen as secondary--friendships, kinship with adult siblings, care teams that form in times of illness, or various alternative family formations. She also values difficult and amorphous loves like loving a challenging job or inanimate objects that can't love you back. She draws from personal experience, sharing stories about her loving but combative family, the fiercely independent Emerson scholar who pushed her away, and the friends who have become her invented or found family; pop culture touchstones like the Women's March, John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, and the timeless series Cheers; and the work of writers like Joan Didion, Gwendolyn Brooks, Flannery O'Connor, and Herman Melville (Moby-Dick like you've never seen it!). Hard to Love pays homage and attention to unlikely friends and lovers both real and fictional. It is a series of love letters to the meaningful, if underappreciated, forms of intimacy and community that are tricky, tangled, and tough, but ultimately sustaining.

As a boy, Edward Hopper knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up: on the cover of his pencil box, he wrote the words EDWARD HOPPER, WOULD-BE ARTIST. He traveled to New York and to Paris to hone his craft. And even though no one wanted to buy his paintings for a long time, he never stopped believing in his dream to be an artist. He was fascinated with painting light and shadow and his works explore this challenge. Edward Hopper's story is one of courage, resilience, and determination. In this striking picture book biography, Robert Burleigh and Wendell Minor invite young readers into the world of a truly special American painter (most celebrated for his paintings "Nighthawks" and "Gas").

Illustrated by over 50 of Edward Hopper's most powerful evocations of New York, Avis Berman's essay explores how Hopper and his work illuminate each other by analyzing what his New York is - and is not. Ever the contrarian, he offers an alternative to what other American artists seized on - the new, the gigantic, the technologically exciting. Hopper stayed away from tourist attractions or landmarks of the city's glamorous skyline. His preference for nondescript vernacular buildings is emblematic of the larger Hopper paradox: he makes emptiness full, silence articulate, banality intense, plainness mysterious, and tawdriness noble.

Jessica Hopper's music criticism has earned her a reputation as a firebrand, a keen observer and fearless critic not just of music but the culture around it. With this volume spanning from her punk fanzine roots to her landmark piece on R. Kelly's past, The First Collection leaves no doubt why The New York Times has called Hopper's work "influential." Not merely a selection of two decades of Hopper's most engaging, thoughtful, and humorous writing, this book documents the last 20 years of American music making and the shifting landscape of music consumption. The book journeys through the truths of Riot Grrrl's empowering insurgence, decamps to Gary, IN, on the eve of Michael Jackson's death, explodes the grunge-era mythologies of Nirvana and Courtney Love, and examines emo's rise. Through this vast range of album reviews, essays, columns, interviews, and oral histories, Hopper chronicles what it is to be truly obsessed with music. The pieces in The First Collection send us digging deep into our record collections, searching to re-hear what we loved and hated, makes us reconsider the art, trash, and politics Hopper illuminates, helping us to make sense of what matters to us most.

It is with some pride that I have produced The Hopper Man’s Easy Curry Cookbook. It fulfils a lifelong dream to share my favourite curry recipes with those with a similar taste for exotic spices and flavours. Born in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) to Dutch Burgher parents but living most of my life in Australia, my introduction to the spectacular variety of curries was slow. But thanks to my father’s love of all things Ceylonese, its friendly people, exotic countryside, occasionally deadly wildlife and spicy foods were all very real to me from a young age. As a caterer and cook for many years, using “The Hopper Man” moniker, I have further developed a love not just for curries but the many varied accompaniments that are so unique and special. Obviously, for those who know of ‘hoppers’ with their lovely fermented rice and coconut milk aroma, they are my speciality and passion, and if you don’t know, well, that’s just another great reason to read and enjoy this cookbook. Bon appetit to you all.

There's a serial killer in the Caribbean. A pure hunter who's like nothing the world has ever known. The media names him the Island Hopper. When the body count adds up, FBI team-leader Jack Seargant directs the international investigation. A veteran of the elite Behavioral Sciences Unit, Seargant is as tenacious and bold as he is physical. With no clues to go on, he launches verbal attacks on the killer to draw him out, and the two begin a lethal game of cat and mouse. Soon Seargant is joined by Tom Brightwell; an alcoholic, suicidal ex-homicide cop, whose own daughter may have been the first victim. As things heat up, Tom becomes obsessed with finding the killer, and he begins an incredible journey to reclaim his life. When they uncover shocking evidence, the story takes a dramatic turn, leading to the most unlikely of places and circumstances. In The Island Hopper, Michael Hilliard paints the Caribbean Islands as they are; care-free and vibrant, with all the sights and sounds that make them so inspiring. The story is fast-paced and keeps the reader guessing. It's laced with the meticulous descriptions and unforgettable characters that make Michael Hilliard one of the more unique and freshest voices in modern suspense novels.
