Excerpt from The History of Abraham Lincoln, and the Overthrow of Slavery If he has been able to aid to any extent, the American people to a better understanding, and to a fuller and more just appreciation of the moral and intellectual character of Mr. Lincoln, and the means by which slavery has been overthrown and the slaveholders' rebellion subdued, he will be amply rewarded for the labor bestowed. In regard to the truthfulness and impartiality of the work, the author will only say that, while acknowledging frankly that all his convictions and sympathies have been with the cause of liberty and loyalty, he has not, consciously, done injustice to any. Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln There is no doubt that for some time prior to the assassination of Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Arnold had contemplated writing his life. Previous to that event, and while yet a member of Congress, he had commenced to write the History of Abraham Lincoln and the Overthrow of Slavery, which he completed and published in 1867. He brought to the preparation of that work the qualities of an able and conscientious historian, who wrote very largely from personal knowledge and personal observation. It is a book of real interest and exceptional historic value. Impor tant and valuable facts are to be Obtained therein which are not to be found elsewhere. This work was never entirely satisfactory to Mr. Arnold, so far as it related to Mr. Lincoln, and hence some two years since he determined to write in a stricter sense the life of Mr. Lincoln, in the light of additional material he had gathered, and disconnected with the history of the overthrow of slavery, except in so far as the subject was connected generally with the administration Of Mr. Lincoln. Excerpt from Sketch of the Life of Abraham Lincoln: Compiled in Most Part From the History of Abraham Lincoln, and the Overthrow of Slavery Time out of mind, words prefatory have been considered indispensable to the successful publication of a book. This sketch of the life and death of abraham lincoln is in tended as an accompaniment to the Historical Painting Which has rescued from oblivion, and, With almost perfect fidelity, transmitted to futurity, the last hours OF lincoln. In its preparation has been invoked the aid of one Who in life was near the heart of mr. Lincoln, and at death was a Witness to that last sad scene, so accurately delineated by the painter's art - the Hon. Isaac N. Arnold. His intimate and social relations With mr. Lincoln, his unbounded admira tion of the goodness and sincerity of the Great Emancipator, renders this invocation eminently appropriate. This sketch contains subject-matter never before made public, presented in the full dress of the author's happiest style. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: And the Abolition of Slavery in the United States It is of course impossible to give within the limits of a small book all the details of a busy life, and also the history of the American Emancipation and its causes but I trust that I have omitted little of much' importance. The books to which I have been chiefly indebted, and from which I have borrowed most freely, are the lives of Lincoln by W. H. Lamon, and by my personal friends H. J. Raymond and Dr. Holland and also the works referring to the war by I. N. Arnold, F. B. Carpenter, L. P. Brockett, A. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and the Downfall of American Slavery HE character of Abraham Lincoln, as the years pass, becomes grander and more heroic; and, as is usual when a commanding figure slowly rises conspicuous in the history of humanity, traditions and myths are already beginning to cluster around his illustrious personality. The simplest truth is always best; and the simpler and more direct the biographical sketch of Abraham Lincoln, the more deeply will his image be impressed upon the heart of that common people Whom he loved so well and of which he was the noblest representative. In this book it has been the author's aim to present such a picture of Lincoln and his times as shall leave upon the mind of the reader a definite and authoritative likeness of the man whose name is now enrolled highest among the types of our national ideals.relati was 3.
