Excerpt from The Higher Powers of Man One is the individual and conscious, and the other, the phyletic or racial, which is more unconscious and generic. It is this that constitutes the deeper nature of man and in such varied phenomena as inspiration, Whether thought to be due to the Holy Ghost or to a muse; and ecstasy, whether of sense, thought, feeling, or will; and in all su perlative achievements of man in every domain, we have manifestations of this higher, larger, stronger, racial self, expressed in the individual. There is much justification for saying that most of the greatest achievements of man, not merely in artistic creation and the works of genius, where we are most ready to recognize it, but even in intellectual domains, have been done in this second or higher state, or at least have owed much to it, and a high authority on war has lately told us that this war will be won by that side that can ring up most of this reserve energy, when they go over the top, or in a bayonet charge. Excerpt from Essays on the Active Powers of Man The division of the faculties of the human mind into Understanding and Will is very ancient, and has been very generally adopted; the former comprehending all our speculative, the latter all our active Powers. It is evidently the intention of our Maker, that man should be an active and not merely a speculative being. For this purpose, certain active powers have been given him, limited indeed in many respects, but suited to his rank and place in the creation. Our business is to manage these powers, by proposing to ourselves the best ends, planning the most proper system of conduct that is in our power, and executing it with industry and zeal. This is true wisdom; this is the very intention of our being. Every thing virtuous and praise-worthy must lie in the right use of our power; every thing vicious and blameable in the abuse of it. What is not within the sphere of our power cannot be imputed to us either for blame or praise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Instinct: Its Office in the Animal Kingdom, and Its Relation to the Higher Powers in Man Observer and thinker may do something to settle these disputed points, but the scantiness Of materi als generally at hand and the liability to error in the interpretations of facts, should make every la borer cautious in his own work and lenient towards the mistakes Of others. It is with a deep convic tion Of the need Of the hearty cooperation of the cultivators of different fields Of science, especially Of Naturalists and Mental Philosophers, in the full study of man, that these Lectures are presented to the public. The necessity Of investigation in spe cial departments Of science is readily conceded. But if men must consume all their strength on one specialty they should remember that excellence in that is no measure Of their ability to decide ques tions in other departments. But such excellence in a single specialty, however restricted, is too often taken by its possessor and by the community as a measure of his just authority on every question he chooses to decide. Broad culture as a foundation for scientific attainments, respect for other sciences than our own and intercourse with those who View the same subjects from other stand-points than our own, are absolutely essential for safe generalizations in those complex sciences that relate to animal and rational life. Excerpt from Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man I. Distribution of the Sciences.] Human knowledge may be reduced to two general heads, according as it relates to body or to mind; to things material, or to thin gs intellectual. The whole system Of bodies in the universe, of which We know but a very small part, may be called the ma terisl world; the whole system of minds, from the in finite Creator to the meanest creature endowed with thought, may be called the intellectual world. These are the two great kingdoms of nature that fall within our notice; and about the one or the other, or things pertaining to them, every art, every science, and every human thought are employed; nor can the boldest flight of imagination carry us beyond their limits. Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Active and Moral Powers of Man To this passage, which is, I think, just in the main, I have only to object, that, in consequence of the ambi guity of the word passion, it is apt to suggest an erro neous idea of the author's meaning. It is plain that he uses it to denote our active principles in general; and, in this sense, there can be no doubt that his doctrine is well founded; inasmuch as, without such principles as curiosity, the love of fame, ambition, avarice, or the love of mankind, our intellectual capacities would for ever remain steril and useless. But it is not in this sense that the word passion is most commonly employed. In its ordin acceptation it denotes those animal impulses which, alt ough they may sometimes prompt to intel lectual exertion, are certainly on the whole unfavorable to intellectual improvement. Helvetius himself has not always attended to this ambiguity of language; and hence may be traced many of the paradoxes and errors of his philosophy.
