Excerpt from Report on the Geological Map of Massachusetts The particular facts which they have contributed will be found in the body of the text. In formation with regard to the eastern boundary of the Miocene on the island of Martha's Vineyard, and some other points, were contributed by Prof. N. S. Shaler, from maps prepared by him for the United States Coast Survey, and our acknowledgments are also due to them. Valuable and efficient aid, without which much of the work would necessarily have remained undone, has been received from the Presidents and Directors of the following Railroad Companies, in the form of free passes over their respective lines: the Eastern, Fitchburg, Old Colony, Boston and Providence, and Connecticut River. The Boston Society of Natural History has also, in the loss of the services of the Custodian and his Assistant, while engaged in the construction of the Map, contributed largely to its successful completion. Mr. Crosby has been much in the field, the weather having been very favorable during the past winter. Mr. Burbank and others have also spent considerable time in this way. In fact, everything has been done to make the original work accurate, which the time and the necessarily limited appropriation would permit. Excerpt from Final Report on the Geology of Massachusetts, Vol. 1: Containing I. Economical Geology, II. Scenographical Geology Nor would I forget my indebtedness to the other branches of the Government for the liberal patronage and support which they have bestowed upon this enterprise. Let me here, also, testify to the universal disposition which I have found manifested in every part of the Commonwealth, to forward the objects of the survey. For ten years, - I might in truth say twenty, - I have Spent a principal portion of my time in wandering over the State. I have climbed all her mountains. I have penetrated her most sequestered valleys and glens. In short, I have traveled within her boundaries not less than miles; not with rail road speed, but rather with a geological, which is nearly synonomous with a pedestrian pace: yet have I everywhere met with a hospitality that has supplied all my wants, and with intelligence enough to understand and appreciate, and a disposition to forward, the objects of my commission. These circumstances have given a deep interest to my geological excursions, and make the retrospect of them among the happiest recollections of my life while they have greatly exalted my opin ion of the kindness, intelligence, and happy condition of our population, and increased my attach ment to my native State. Excerpt from History of Worcester, Massachusetts It is true that local self-government, in a modified form, had been known both in Germany and England before the earliest colonization of America. But long before that colonization commenced the Crown had, by repeated encroachments, deprived the people of their ancient right of self-control, and that right or power had been vested in municipal councils or other local boards, and which were self-perpetuating bodies.3 But when removed from the presence of that domi nating power of the few over the many, the colonists at once returned to what has been called the natural order of society in the establishment of government. Excerpt from Contributions to the Geology of Eastern Massachusetts Early in the summer of 1875 I began a systematic study of the rocks in this vicinity, with the view of collecting such data as, added to my previous knowledge, would enable me to prepare a thesis for graduation in the department of Natural History of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, on the "Geology of the Environs of Boston." In the beginning of the following winter I was charged by Prof. A. Hyatt, under the direction of the Massachusetts Commission to the Centennial Exhibition, with the task of preparing a geological map of the State, for exhibition at Philadelphia. Opportunity was afforded me by the Commission to visit all parts of the State. The Boston Society of Natural History generously permitted the use of my time as assistant in their Museum for this purpose, and, as that winter was unusually favorable for exploration, I was in the field almost constantly. The Centennial map and the report on the same were completed in the following spring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
