Excerpt from The Gardener's Magazine, 1831, Vol. 7 In the course of the publication of this Volume, the Conductor has had an opportunity of personally ascertaining, during a exten sive tour, the state of gardening, and the wants and wis es of a number of his readers, in the central and northern counties of England, and in the west of Scotland. He has been confirmed in his intention of continuing the reports of the Provincial Horticul tural Societies, subject to the modifications laid down in p. 626. He has ascertained, beyond all doubt, that gardening has made much more progress during the last quarter of a century as an art of culture than as an art of design and taste; and that, in consequence, the wants of his readers, whether gardeners, their employers, or amateurs, are chiefly in the department of taste in other words, in landscape-gardening and garden architecture. Excerpt from The Gardener's Magazine and Register of Rural and Domestic Improvement, 1828, Vol. 4 The Fourth Volume of the Gardener's Magazine contains a num ber of additional facts on the important subject of heating hot houses by hot water, and a various and extended correspondence on all the subjects which the work embraces. In the list of authors of this and the three preceding Volumes, will be found above a hundred and fifty names of practical gar denets who have never before written in any publication. Inde pendently of the useful facts which these writers have communicated to their professional brethren, the circumstance of having excited so many individuals to write for the first time, must, we think, be considered as attesting the utility of the Gardener's Magazine; because to induce gardeners to think and to write, is to open up to them new exercises for the mind, a higher class of wishes to be gratified, and, in consequence, a degree of happiness increased in proportion to the exertions necessary for the gratification of these Wishes.
