Excerpt from The Florentine Histories, Vol. 1 of 2 For: three hundred years the Florentine Histories have been regarded with veneration by the scholars of Europe. It is one of those few works to which the judgment of successive generations has assigned a high place in the annals of the world. It has been consulted by the student of History to explore the majestic ruins of the Roman empire, for the origin of all modern states-by the philosopher to trace the progress of light and liberty, as they travelled down through the gloom of the middle ages - by the vindicators of man and of truth, to read the story of their servitude, their struggles and their triumphs. Excerpt from The Florentine History, Vol. 1 of 2 When first I resolved to write the History of the affairs, foreign and domestic, of the Florentine people, my intention was to begin my narrative from the year of our Lord 1434, at which date the House of Medici, through the merits of Cosimo and of his father Giovanni, obtained greater authority in Florence than any other family in that city. For I thought to myself that Messer Lionardo of Arezzo and Messer Poggio, both of them admirable historians, must have recorded at length all that had taken place before that time. But afterwards, having diligently studied their writings with a View to learn what order and methods they had followed, and by imitating these make my own History more attractive to the reader, I found that while they had been most circumstantial in their account of the various wars waged by the Florentines against foreign Princes and Peoples, as regards civil discords and intestine feuds, and the effects following from them, they had either been wholly silent or had treated them so briefly as to afford the reader neither pleasure nor profit. (this course I believe them to have taken, either because they thought such matters too trivial for written record or else through fear of offending the descendants of those persons whom, in writing of them, they would have had occasion to. For, seeing the Roman youth begin to follow them about admiringly, and knowing the harm that might result to his country from this specious idleness, he caused a law to be passed that thenceforward no philosopher should be received in Rome. Excerpt from Florentine History N icolo machiavelli, who was born in 1469 and died in I 527, received a commission in 1520, at the instance of Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, to write the history of Florence. By the year I 52 5 the Istorie Fiorentine was completed, so far as we have it, and presented to the Cardinal, who in the meantime had become Pope under the title Of Clement VII. Whatever benefits the choice or acceptance of a Medici as a patron may have brought Machiavelli in his lifetime it secured a publisher for his writings, because in 1531 Clement granted to Antonio Blado the privilege of printing the Istorie Fiorentine, II Principe, Discorsi, and a few other works. But by this time death, to which Machiavelli had Often referred as the enemy to the accomplishment of so many great objects, had stepped in and the golden pen was laid aside for ever. Thus the promise which the author had made to his patron of continuing the history of Florence was never fulfilled. Excerpt from Florence, Vol. 1 of 2: The Beautiful Sion perhaps lends to it an additional charm. The iron rail traverses, but has not invaded its repose, peaceful hamlets rest on the banks of the noble Loire, which rolls on its course with the stillness of a strong and mighty Spirit conscious of a great purpose. Here commerce recals to the happy, listless tra veller, idling on the river banks, that, separate himself as he may from the world, there are links which cannot be broken, and that even the silent, unconscious river binds man to man, and nation to nation; but here it is commerce in her most graceful form, such as artists love to paint, and poets to. Excerpt from The History of Florence Iccolo machiavelli received in the year 1520, from Giulio de' Medici, the commission to write his [storie Fiorentine. His Dedication of the completed work to Pope Clement VII. Was written in I 527, the year of Machiavelli's death. This book has a place of honour in the history Of Modern Literature, as the first work in which the Annal-writing of {he Chronicler gave place to the more artistic shaping of a. History that found in political societies of man the operation of first principles of life under varying social conditions. With simple grouping of details into coherent chapters, Machiavelli first shows how the shaping of Italian states, the making of modern Italy, produced conditions that affected from within and from without the public life of Florence. Then he begins in his second book the History of Florence herself, which he brings down to his own time, and closes with the death of Lorenzo de' Medici; natural end of an epoch in the History of Florence. Machiavelli's own age at that time was twenty-three. The English version here given of Machiavelli's History is reprinted from the first complete translation of The Works of the Famous Nicolas Machiavel, Citizen and Secretary of Florence. Written originally in Italian, and from thence newly and faith fully translated into English. London, folio, 1675. Twenty years later there was a second edition of this folio, and there was a third edition in 1720. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Two First Centuries of Florentine History: The Republic and Parties at the Time of Dante Before deciding to issue this translation I had first to reflect whether my Florentine studies could be of any use to the English public. Since Roscoe's day, English literature has been enriched by works of much importance on different phases of the political, literary, and artistic history of Florence. Both Napier and Trollope have bequeathed very complete narratives of Florentine events, and translations of notable foreign works have also been produced. But nearly all these works appeared before any scientific research as to the origin of the City and Commonwealth had begun, or, at least, before it had reached the results I have briefly expounded, and which deserve notice, not only on the score of intrinsic worthy but also because they throw new light on the subsequent history of Florence.
