The Development Dimension Fishing For Development

This publication highlights the main conclusions of the Fishing for Development joint meeting, held in Paris in April 2014 to initiate a dialogue between the fisheries and development policy communities.

At a time when millions of people in developing countries depend of fisheries for their livelihoods and nutrition and with most fisheries being over or fully exploited, this book examines the interface between development and fisheries policy.

This publication is a compilation of papers and records of the Workshop on Policy Coherence for Development in Fisheries, hosted by the OECD's Committee for Fisheries and Development Assistance Committee in April 2006.

Provides an analytical framework adapted to the West African context, as well as an action framework based on the facts and realities in the field in order to improve the coherence of fisheries policies in West Africa.

This publication highlights the main conclusions of the Fishing for Development joint meeting, held in Paris in April 2014. The meeting was organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank (WB) to initiate a dialogue between the fisheries and development policy communities from member and partner countries and organizations of the OECD. It brought together delegates to the OECD Fisheries Committee and OECD Development Assistance Committee, representatives of partner developing countries invited by FAO, as well as experts and representatives from FAO, WB, non-governmental organizations and regional organizations. The meeting focused on issues central to promoting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in developing, emerging and developed countries alike. This publication also includes the background papers originally prepared to provide context for the issues addressed. It identifies questions for a future work agenda on policy coherence in fisheries and aquaculture, and makes evident the strong need for further dialogue between the fisheries and development communities at global and regional scales.

Adopting more sustainable ways of managing the ocean is a global priority: protecting its health will bring benefits to all. Developing countries face specific challenges, as many depend heavily on ocean-based industries and are overly exposed to the consequences of ocean degradation.

This publication sets out the proceedings of a workshop, hosted by the OECD's Committee for Fisheries and Development Assistance Committee and held in Paris in April 2006, to discuss policy coherence for development in fisheries. Policy coherence relates to the application of mutually reinforcing policies across government departments to achieve objectives consistent with internationally agreed development goals. The study focuses on the fisheries sector because it is central for poverty reduction strategies in many developing countries, mutually supportive policies by OECD and non-OECD countries are urgently needed to protect vital marine fisheries resources and in order to promote sustainable development.

Aquaculture may not be the panacea for the world's food problems, but It has the potential to make important contributions to diet and incomes in some areas. This book, intended to improve planning for further development of aquaculture, examines the factors that can determine the success or failure of aquaculture projects in developing countries.
