Excerpt from The Conquest of Mexico, Vol. 2 Cortes dashed TO the assistance OF his secretary. The Anonymous Conqueror on p. 23 tells of horses being killed by maquahuitl blows on the head and breast. Such statements, supported by the Codices telleriano-remensis, Vaticanus A, Baranda, and the Lienzo di Tlaxcala, prove that horses were by no means always armour-plated. Excerpt from The Conquest of Mexico, Vol. 1 From the outset, however, it was evident that the charm of such an adventure might be complicated by the necessity for an unusual amount of archaeological impedimenta, my objec tive being ancient Mexico, not modern Mexico, where almost every trace of the old splendour was long ago obliterated by Christian zeal. The Gods have fled that country, and now one finds some of them sitting in ghostly quiet in the British Museum. Excerpt from The Conquest of Mexico After a short stay in England he returned to Boston, and desired, in spite Of his failing sight, to lead a life of literary occupation. It may seem strange that one, who in his college days had only the ambition of learning as much literature as a gentleman ought to know, and who had never been able to accustom himself to habits of industry, should now consecrate his energies to literary pursuits but the last six years Of his life had been years of stern discipline, and during the long days spent in the dark room, graver thoughts and a nobler ambition had filled his mind. The difficulties before him were great. His classical studies, it is true, had never been neglected, but his deficiencies in modern literature were considerable. Of English he had had as much perhaps read to him as most people of his age had read to themselves. Of French literature he knew nothing; and of Spanish and Italian he had merely a. Schoolboy's knowledge. Moreover, he had constantly to fight against a tendency to waste his time, While the necessity of forming fixed habits of work was a task of no little difficulty. He determined to begin from the very elements, and, Wisely too, to begin with English. He studied as if he were a schoolboy, beginning with Lindley Murray's grammar, and Johnson's dictionary, and then reading carefully the best authors, from Ascham and Bacon to those of his own time. Thus a year passed. Then, having finished this course, he turned to French literature, going, as he says, deeper and wider than he had done in English. Italian came next, and then Spanish. German, however, he was compelled, owing to his weak sight, to abandon. He now felt competent to begin the real task of writing a history, and searched for a subject. After some hesitation he decided on a history of the times of Ferdinand and Isabella. To enable him to attempt the work, a secretary, Mr. English, was engaged to read to him for five or Six hours every day. Prescott was in no hurry. For the next three and a half years he was collecting materials, and then only commenced the actual composition so that it was not till the year 1837 (or thirteen years after the time at which he decided on his subject) that Ferdinand and Isabella was fairly delivered to the world. Excerpt from History of the Conquest of Mexico, Vol. 4 In a former page I have mentioned that it was the plan of Cortés, on entering the Valley, to commence operations by reducing the subordinate cities before striking at the capital itself, which, like some goodly tree whose roots had been severed one after another, would be thus left without support against the fury of the tempest. The first point of attack which he selected was the ancient city of Iztapalapan a place contain ing fifty thousand inhabitants, according to his own account, and situated about six leagues distant, on the narrow tongue of land which divides the waters of the great salt lake from those of the fresh. It was the private domain of the last sovereign of Mexico 5 where, as the reader may remember, he entertained the white men the night before their entrance into the capital, and astonished them by the display of his princely gardens. T 0 this monarch they owed no good will, for he had conducted the operations on the maize He was, indeed, no more; but the people of his city entered heartily into his hatred of the strangers, and were now the most loyal vassals of the Mexican crown. Excerpt from Montezuma and the Conquest of Mexico Whiie in the eastern hemisphere, he who imagined the possibility of reaching land beyond the mysterious atlantic, was deemed but a vis ionary dreamer, civilization had flourished, fallen and sprung up again in the western world. AI ready the wonderful ruins of an ancient American civilization had been overgrown by old forests, and the builders of them were forgotten by the people of Montezuma's day. While Columbus, ignorant of the extent of the globe, and of the great continent which lay between him and Asia, believed that he had but discovered a passage to the East Indies, more than one American monarch was extending and consolidating a king dom which bade fair to last for ages. The gentle savages of the West Indian Archipelago were soon subjugated by the Spanish sword and were easily ground by cruel Spanishavarice, but the great Gulf of Mexico hid for a time the mainland from the settlements upon the Islands. Excerpt from By Right of Conquest: Or With Cortez in Mexico The conquest of Mexico, an extensive empire with a numerous and warlike population, by a mere handful of Spaniards is one of the romances of history; indeed, a writer of fiction would scarcely have dared to invent so improbable a story. Even the bravery of the Spaniards and the advantage of superior arms would not have sufficed to give them the victory had it not been that Mexico was ripe for disruption. The Aztecs, instead of conciliating by wise and gentle government the peoples they had conquered, treated them with such despotic harshness. That they were ready to ally them selves with the invaders and to join with them heartily against the central power; so that instead of battling against an empire single-handed, the Spaniards had really only to war with a great city, and were assisted by a vast army of auxiliaries. Excerpt from History of the Conquest of Mexico, Vol. 1 But for this work he felt that the most careful preparation was necessary. In a letter, written eighteen months before his death, he says, I pro posed to devote ten years of my life to the study of ancient and modern literature, chie y the latter, and to give ten years more to some historical work. I have had the good fortune to accomplish this design pretty nearly within the limits assigned. In the Christmas of 1837 my first work was given to the public.
