Excerpt from The Classic Point of View: Six Lectures on Painting, Delivered on the Scammon Foundation at the Art Institute of Chicago in the Year 1911 In the course of a life devoted to the study, the practice, and the teaching of the art of painting I have, naturally, arrived at some pretty definite conclusions as to the nature of that art and of the problems involved in it - some decided opinions as to what that art has been, is, and should be. These opinions I have tried, however imperfectly, to exemplify in my work and to inculcate in my teaching. They have also, inevitably, colored what I have written. But what I have written has, hitherto, been casual and occasional - a discussion of this or that master, a criticism of this or that particular work of art - and the bases of my criticism, the fundamental ideas on which it is founded, have had, for the most part, to be taken for granted, or to be cursorily and incompletely expressed. These papers have, moreover, been written at long intervals, and for different purposes, and could hardly be entirely consistent with each other. Something like a general point of view could, perhaps, be inferred from them, and something like a consistent body of doctrine made out, by the exercise of sufficient care and sufficient intelligence; but such careful and intelligent consideration as would be necessary could hardly be expected of many readers. The first book from AD100 designer Veere Grenney—the master of streamlined, glamorous, classical rooms with an English touch—eloquently explores not only the hows but also the whys of decorating. Featuring thirty years of acclaimed interiors, paired with thoughtful advice and packaged with a real cloth case and mixed paper stocks, A Point of View is a rich album of Grenney’s decorating work, from London townhouses to Long Island estates, with multiple images per page. Organized by room, these chapters feature Grenney’s room-by-room decorating philosophy for entrances, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens, and explore thematic topics such as Englishness and composition and balance. Grenney also shares his own story, from his early years on the ’70s London design scene to starting his own firm, from his first flat in London to his renovation of David Hicks’ former house, the Temple, to his new holiday house in Tangier. There is also a chapter on the iconic designers who have inspired him. Whether it’s a country house or an urbane apartment, Grenney’s world is one of settled calm and welcoming comfort, where there are always generous fireplaces to sit in front of, billiard rooms and stone-flagged passages, and utility rooms where boots and coats are stored; grandeur and modesty side by side. This book is a must for Anglophiles and design lovers.

Tests the views and metaphor of 19th-century utilitarian philosopher Henry Sidgwick against a variety of contemporary views on ethics, determining that they are defensible and thus providing a defense of objectivism in ethics and of hedonistic utilitarianism.
