From the narrow, picturesque shopping streets, with curious signs and carvings of quaint device, and their men and women in costumes of varied hue, it is but a step or two and you are in England, France or America, as the case may be. Each has her Colony, and in each the customs of the country are distinctly apparent. England and things English, however, have the predominance. My first impressions of Shanghai were obtained, as those of most people, from the comfortable scat of a locally built carriage. The hire of a smart victoria, a rubber-tired brougham, two ponies - to allow of frequent changing - two "mafoos" in flowing gaily-trimmed gowns and capes, red-tasselled headgear and streaming pigtails, amounts to only thirty dollars per month. The natural consequence is that Europeans seldom walk. Driving on Bubbling Well Road in the afternoon, especially on Hunt days, and seeing the great number of well-dressed women, handsome men and fine horses, it is difficult to believe oneself out of England. The connecting link, about a mile long, between the fashionable Bubbling Well Road and the Bund or river front, is Nankin Road, or, as it is generally called, the "Maloo." This is lined most of the distance with native shops which gradually give place to some very handsome European ones, ending at Shanghai's greatest glory, her Bund. Handsome clubs, banks, hongs and residences embellish one side, whilst between it and the river lies a beautiful stretch of green sward and shade trees. The figures for Canada are not available, but from the Report of the Commissioner of Internal Revenue of the United States published in 1917, it appears that at the end of 1916 there were millionaires in that country. In that year 396 persons in the United States paid taxes on in comes of or more, as against 120 in 1915, 60 in 1914 and 44 in 1913, an increase of eight-fold in three war years! The first of these were the paintings in the new municipal build ings in Toronto, and were the artist's gift to the city. They consist of two large panels picturing pioneer life in Canada, and of the figures filling the spandrels of the arches that come between the panels. This was in itself pioneer work, beset with difficulties, and meeting with faint praise in some directions, but work which opened the way for others than himself, and which has proved a factor in the forming of public taste. In the treatment of these paintings Mr. Reid has so adapt ed his colour scheme so that it forms a pleasing part of a whole, toning in with the warm pinks and greys of the surrounding marble.
