Excerpt from The Bruce The main point about Hart's edition (h) is that it supplies 39 lines not found in either ms., with an expansion of two others into eight, 45 new lines in all. The expanded portion Skeat perforce relegates to the footnotes. Twelve lines from Hart in the last book he at first accepted as genuine, but finally discarded as an interpolation.3 He might justifiably have gone further, for he seems to me to have erred in attach ing undue importance to Hart's unsupported contributions. Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Excerpt from Bruce of the Circle I beg your pardon. Can you tell me the name of the best hotel? She asked. The man who had seized the trunk stopped rolling it toward the doorway and turned quickly to look at the woman Who stood there in the pallid glow from the one oil lamp. He saw a blue straw toque fitting tightly over a compact mass Of black hair; he saw blue eyes, earnest and troubled; red lips, with the fullness of youth; flushed cheeks, a trim, small body clothed in a close fitting, dark suit. Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Excerpt from Bruce If Lass had been a male dog, her beauty and sense and lovableness would have found a ready purchaser for her. For nine pet collies out of ten are seconds and splendid pets they make for the most part. But Lass, at the very start, had committed the unforgivable sin of being born a female. Therefore, no pet-seeker wanted to buy her. Even when she was offered for sale at half the sum asked for her less handsome brothers, no one wanted her.
