Excerpt from The British and Foreign Evangelical Review, 1869, Vol. 18 The fundamental Object of the Gnostic speculations was doubtless to solve the two grand problems of all religious philosophy, viz., How to account for the existence of evil and, How to reconcile the finite with the infinite. But these ancient theorists were not more success ful in grappling with such questions than have been their successors in modern times. And by giving loose reins to their imagination, they built up the most incongruous and ridiculous systems; while, by deserting the guidance of Scripture, they were betrayed into the most pernicious and extravagant errors. Excerpt from The British and Foreign Evangelical Review, 1870, Vol. 19 Be these things as they may, we have in this treatise the queries and objections of a Jew met by the counter queries and answers of a Christian, in a style reminding us at once of the classic elegance and caustic acuteness of Calvin, and presenting a short and striking resume of Jewish unbelief, on the one hand, ' and Christian faith on the other. Out of twenty-three pointed queries by the Jew, and as many terse replications by the Christian, we quote only the following - I ask, says the Jew, if Christ is God, why He calls himself the Son of Man, when in many places of Scripture the law warns us not to make God like to a man? As, God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the Son of Man, that He should repent' (numb. Xxiii. Besides, David says, 'put not your trust in princes, nor in the Son of Man, in whom there is no help (ps. Cxlvi. In like manner, cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the lord' (j er. Xvii. But all these things were in Jesus, who is called the Son of Man. I ask, says the Christian, why God in the Song of Moses is called 'a man of war (exod. Xv. Why Ezekiel, in that memorable vision, tells us that, upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it; this was the ap pearance of the likeness of the glory of the lord' (ezek. I. 26, Why so often God ascribes to Himself nostrils, eyes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The British and Foreign Evangelical Review, 1868, Vol. 17 But the in uence possessed by Mr Newman, as leader of the Tractites, was tri ing and insignificant when compared with that which is enjoyed by Dr Pusey. Whatever question may exist as to the character Of that in uence, there can be no question as to its extent. We may adopt the complimentary language of the eminent oratorian: There is no one anywhere - among ourselves, in your own body, or, I suppose, in the Greek Church, - who can affect so vast a circle Of men, so Vir tuons, so able, so learned, so zealous, as come, more or less, under your or we may concur in the belief of S. G. That Dr Pusey has done more mischief to the Protestant Church than any other man living who yet professes to belong to it in either case we shall do well to inquire what it is that Dr Pusey teaches as the true doctrine of the real pre sence.
