Excerpt from The Beaver, Vol. 2: A Journal of Progress; May, 1922 Thus there is much interest attached to the name of this province. It was, as recorded, given by the good queen whose long reign brought such great lustre on the empire that it will always be known in history as the Victorian Age - famous in literature, art, science and religion. And no one encouraged these great elements by which empires live so much as the illustrious woman who held her throne secure, broad-based upon her people's willand compassed by the inviolate sea. Excerpt from The Beaver, Vol. 2: A Journal of Progress; November, 1921 To unify the interests of the two con cerns, now become one, and to rid the Company of the double equipment of forts and men (for in almost every place east of the Rocky Mountains wherever one company had placed a fort there its opponent had also built one) was a work requiring diplomacy and deter mination, which occupied him for about three years. Thus, in 1824, Simpson had leisure to give attention to conditions west of the Rocky Mountains. At that time there existed some half a dozen forts, or trading posts, on the headwaters of the Fraser and the Columbia; but on the coast there Was only one, Astoria, or, as it was then called, Fort George, at the mouth of the Columbia river. From that point to the Russian settle ment at Sitka, in Alaska, a distance of about seven hundred miles, no trading post existed; the whole of that great region, including the involved shore line of our province, was exploited by the itinerant trading vessels from Bos ton - the Boston Peddlers as they were sneeringly denominated. Excerpt from The Beaver, Vol. 2: A Journal of Progress; July, 1922 Fort Norman occupies a commanding position on the east side of the Mac kenzie river just above its confluence with the clear, swift flowing Great Bear river, which drains Great Bear lake. On the far side of the Great Bear river looms up that huge precipitous mass of stone and shale known as Bear Rock. The h.b.c. Trading post at Norman, however, has occupied many other positions in its time: on the Mackenzie river itself, and the islands in it, on Bear river, and even on the shores of Great Bear lake, about ninety miles away. Excerpt from The Beaver, Vol. 2: September, 1922 Lord Strathcona was a princely giver to all good causes, as the hospitals, churches, schools and universities of Canada know. He was very simple hearted and unaffected in his manner, and those of us who were occasionally his guests in his own house will always recall the gracious, kindly, gentle old man who assumed no airs but made everyone feel at home. He died at an advanced age, repeating in his closing hours one of the old Scottish paraphrases, O God of Bethel, as he passed into the unseen. By this man's name many schools and places are called in Canada. And pupils will find much food for study in the story of his life. Excerpt from The Beaver, Vol. 2: A Journal of Progress; June, 1922 A peculiarity of the birch tree not found in any other is that its bark is built up in layers or individual skins which not only adds to its strength but allows the canoe builder to trim it to any desired thickness, at the same time making it easy to remove blemishes and cleaning up the surface generally. Furthermore, its grain, instead of run ning lengthwise as in most trees, fol lows the circumference. At first sight this does not seem of much importance, yet of decided in uence on the life of the finished craft, for the bark owing to its restricted width is placed on the canoe as it comes from the tree - that is, the grain running across the canoe thereby greatly reducing the chances of severe damage. Although the tree has an extremely wide range, being found practically from coast to coast and from the inter national boundary to the northern tree limit, it is not always found of a size suitable for the making of canoes. North of the 58th parallel of latitude no trees whatever are large enough to give bark of the required size, and even in more southern localities where once bark was plentiful and good it is not today readily obtained on account of the ravages of forest fires, lumbering operations, and other causes.
