Excerpt from The Ayrshire Record, New Series, Vol. 3: American and Canadian Ayrshire Herd Record (Old Series, Vol; VII.) Since the publication of the last volume, some alterations have been made in the Constitution and regulations of our Association. The most important one is the discontinuance of the registry of "Cattle not tracing directly to importation," by a vote of the Society, January 16, 1879. The number of Vice-Presidents has also been increased from two to five. The same arrangement, with a few slight changes of pedigrees, indexes, etc., has been adopted, as used in Volume II., Ayrshire Record. The number of members is at present one hundred and nine- teen. The number of entries in the old and new series of Herd Book is: cows, 5470; bulls, 2525. Total, 7995 These figures do not include the class not tracing to importation, in Volumes I. and II. In an essay published in 1880, on "The Milk Pail, and the Cows that fill it," Prof. J. P. Sheldon, author of "Dairy Farming," speaking of the Ayrshires, says: "They are wonderful milkers, doing well in milk where most other breeds would hardly live. More completely than most if not all other breeds, they possess the property of converting into milk the elements of food. They are hardy enough to stand severe climates, while they have the faculty of quickly adapting themselves to altered conditions.
