The Approach To Seasonal Employment In The Nordic Countries

This brochure summarizes recent progress made by Canada & the United States under the 1991 Air Quality Agreement and highlights key issues from the 2002 Canada-US Air Quality Agreement Progress Report. It reviews the Agreement and its benefits, the key commitments made to reduce acid rain & ozone, the achievements in emissions reduction, and accomplishments of domestic emissions reduction & monitoring programs. It also summarizes other air quality programs including those related to particulate matter, transboundary air quality, emissions inventories & mapping, and research on the effects of air pollution.

Viewed through a politico-economic lens, Nordic countries share what is often referred to as the ‘Nordic model’, characterised by a comprehensive welfare state; higher spending on childcare; more equitable income distribution; and lifelong-learning policies. This edited collection considers these contexts to explore the complex nature of tourism employment, thereby providing insights into the dynamic nature, characteristics, and meaning of work in tourism. Contributors combine explorations of the impact of policy on tourism employment with a more traditional human resources management approach focusing on employment issues from an organizational perspective, such as job satisfaction, training, and retention. The text points to opportunities as well as challenges relating to issues such as the notion of ‘decent work’, the role and contribution of migrant workers, and more broadly, the varying policy objectives embedded within the Nordic welfare model. Offering a detailed, multi-faceted analysis of tourism employment, this book is a valuable resource for students, researchers and practitioners interested in tourism employment in the region.

The Nordic countries have the world's best working life. Unlike in many other countries, global competition has not created inequality, uncertainty, long working hours, standardization and restrictive managerial control. The main reason for this lies in the way interests are expressed and conflicts are resolved. Both employees and employers are well organized and both recognize the interests of the other. Working life develops in a constant interaction between conflict and compromise. This book examines working conditions in Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland. It explores how these good working conditions are created and maintained. However, many argue that the changes we are currently facing are different, and that the rise of digitalized production will entirely transform our ways and views of working. In this collaborative project, funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers, researchers from the five Nordic countries have studied how the ongoing transformations of production and labour markets associated with digitalization, demographic change and new forms of employment will influence the future of work in the Nordic countries.

This report examines recent activation policies in the United Kingdom aimed at moving people back into work. It offers insight into how countries can improve the effectiveness of their employment services and also control spending on benefits.

Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2021-503/ Most Nordic labour market and welfare state models are shaped around the notion of the standard full-time open-ended contract. However, the recent development in non-standard work (NSW) may challenge these institutions. In this TemaNord report, we analyse the recent development of NSW within the context of the Nordic models. We draw on Nordic Labour Force Survey data to map the recent development in the well-known forms of NSW, and through in-depth case studies, we explore emerging NSW practices and policy responses. There has been a fairly stable development in NSW across the Nordics, but the sector specific statistics and case studies display significant changes beneath this still surface. We find examples of novel policy responses to these developments, but the corona crisis also revealed gaps in the Nordic social- and employment protection regarding emerging forms of NSW.

This report is the result of a project financed by the Working Environment Committee of the Nordic Council of Ministers with the purpose to identify essential factors affecting occupational safety and health of foreign agricultural workers in the Nordic countries. The aim is that this information will be used in developing national occupational safety and health programs, educating farmers and employers and finding strategies to improve safety communication in the agricultural sector in all the Nordic countries.
