Excerpt from Home Mechanics for Amateurs A work of this character possesses equal merit with one entirely completed before the death of the author. As a rule such works have not had the ad vantage of the final perusal and correction by the author. Such has not, however, been the case in the present. Instance, for the following work by the late George M. Hopkins, was completed before his death. Tl ere is no doubt, however, that this volume will come as a surprise to thousands who have closely followed Mr. Hopkins' work, and who have enjoyed making the many experiments described by him. The present volume contains much matter which has never before appeared in print, and some articles which have al ready been published in the Scientific American. The object of the work is to furnish food for thought to the amateur, and to give him suggestions whereby he may pass many pleasant hours in his work-shop. Mr. Hop kins was an expert mechanic. One of his chief pleas ures was to make experiments at'his home in his well equipped work-shop and laboratory, and the work described in the present volume is nearly all the result of experiments made by him during such idle hours. It has been the intent of the author to make the present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Amateur Mechanics: A Book for Old and Young Who Like to Make ThingsThe box must be altered first. One end is removed, and a slit, onethird of the length from the remaining end, cut in 'one side. This slit should be the width of the box and about five inches wide. On either side of the box, half way from open end to closed end, should be cut a hole, just large enough to comfortably admit a hand and arm.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Amateur Mechanic Don't do anything until you have read this book! I might qualify the above statement by saying that if you are an amateur it will pay you to scan the following pages before you try to do mechanical things. The idea I have tried to carry out is to parallel the case of the locomotive engineer. You know, of course, that he did not build the engine he drives but he knows every part of it, exactly how it works, how to run it to get the most power, or speed, or both, out of it with the highest fuel economy and, further, if he should have a breakdown on the road he knows just how to make whatever repairs are needed to go on with his run. Excerpt from The Amateur Mechanic's Workshop: A Treatise Containing Plain and Concise Directions for the Manipulation of Wood and Metals, Including Casting, Forging, Brazing, Soldering, and Carpentry The following pages are intended to supply a want long felt by amateur mechanics of a handy book on the various operations of the workshop. The only work of the kind which includes manipulation in wood and metal is that by Holtzapfl'el, in three expensive volumes, a work of immeasurable value, to which not only the writer of the present treatise, but all who have of late years attempted similar productions, are infinitely indebted The scope, however, of the above is almost of necessity too extensive, as the whole is too costly for the purposes of the general amateur. It was, indeed, designed as an introduction to a comprehensive work on the lathe, and though in a manner complete in itself, it is yet evidently arranged with that ultimate object in view. Hence there appears to be still mom for some such concise treatise as is now offered to the amateur; and it is hoped that the following Hints (for it pretends to little more) may, audios to render more easy those. Excerpt from The Mechanic Grade, or exalt, a great change would begin to be wrought, and this, undoubtedly, would lead to a clearer perception of the spirit, and a carrying out of the principle, which was in the mind of Jesus. Is the diamond less a diamond because accident has cast it among flint, or pebble stones? Is it more a diamond, if set in the finest gold? Is not the gem one? Are not its beauty, and its value one, wherever, or however, it may be set? When these doctrines are generally preached, and embodied in prae tice, every man will begin to feel himself, and TO BE - A man and feeling, and being this, however high, or however low he may be in a worldly point of View, he will regard his fellow men as equals, and brethren, all walking. In dif ferent paths, it may be - all pursuing different avocations yet each bearing on his brow the visible Signet of Jehovah, which confirms the nobility or A godlike nature - each invest ed with a mission to his race, for the faithful discharge of which he is accountable to all future generations. When this spirit comes to be diffused, the rich man will cease to be arrogant, and the poor man will forget to be servile for will not each feel himself equally a man and where upon the face of the wide earth could be found a higher dignity F. Excerpt from A Mechanic's Diary The author of the Mechanic's Diary was averse to the publication of his works until after his death, which occurred July 26, 1906. His reason was that he did not write for popular approval, but to present the truth, as he was able to discover it. He believed that the publication of the truth would hurt no man, but not courting public controversy, he concluded to pass his days in peace and let the future take issue with his deductions, if it would.
