Teletraffic And Datatraffic In A Period Of Change

Within this volume the rapid evolutionary changes currently pervading all telecommunication fields are explored. Changes in teletraffic technology, such as from analog to digital, from dedicated systems to service integrated networks insure a steady increase in teletraffic research activities in the near future. Included in the over 1000 pages of high quality research reports, are six in-depth workshops organized by renown experts in the fields of ATM, stochastic modelling, systems engineering and traffic engineering, future telecom scenarios, teletraffic problems of developing countries, and history of teletraffic. Keynote speakers were given the opportunity of first choices among the papers submitted ensuring excellent quality among the papers included.

The International Teletraffic Congress (ITC) is a recognized international organization taking part in the work of the International Telecommunications Union. The congress traditionally deals with the development of teletraffic theory and its applications to the design, planning and operation of telecommunication systems, networks and services. The contents of ITC 14 illustrate the important role of teletraffic in the current period of rapid evolution of telecommunication networks. A large number of papers address the teletraffic issues behind developments in broadband communications and ATM technology. The extension of possiblities for user mobility and personal communications together with the generalization of common channnel signalling and the provision of new intelligent network services are further extremely significant developments whose teletraffic implications are explored in a number of contributions. ITC 14 also addresses traditional teletraffic subjects, proposing enhancements to traffic engineering practices for existing circuit and packet switched telecommunications networks and making valuable original contributions to the fundamental mathematical tools on which teletraffic theory is based. The contents of these Proceedings accurately reflect the extremely wide scope of the ITC, extending from basic mathematical theory to day-to-day traffic engineering practices, and constitute the state of the art in 1994 of one of the fundamental telecommunications sciences.

This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications LINEAR ALGEBRA, MARKOV CHAINS, AND QUEUEING MODELS is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1991-92 IMA program on "Applied Linear Algebra". A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. xi PREFACE This volume contains some of the lectures given at the workshop Lin ear Algebra, Markov Chains, and Queueing Models held January 13-17, 1992, as part of the Year of Applied Linear Algebra at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications. Markov chains and queueing models play an increasingly important role in the understanding of complex systems such as computer, communi cation, and transportation systems. Linear algebra is an indispensable tool in such research, and this volume collects a selection of important papers in this area. The articles contained herein are representative of the underlying purpose of the workshop, which was to bring together practitioners and re searchers from the areas of linear algebra, numerical analysis, and queueing theory who share a common interest of analyzing and solving finite state Markov chains. The papers in this volume are grouped into three major categories-perturbation theory and error analysis, iterative methods, and applications regarding queueing models.

This volume presents the proceedings of the Fourth Workshop on Multiaccess, Mobility and Teletraffic for Wireless Communications held in October 1998 in Washington, D.C. The focus of this workshop is to identify, present and discuss the theoretical and implementation issues critical to the design of wireless networks. To ensure proper network design and engineering, designers of wireless networks need to understand and address issues such as radio propagation, antenna, interference management, multiaccess, mobility, teletraffic, signalling and networking protocols. In fact, not only do these issues need to be understood and addressed, their interdependence and interactions also deserve to be examined closely. Therefore, the goal of this workshop is to present papers addressing these issues, with the hope of stimulating further collaboration among researchers of various disciplines in wireless communications. High-speed wireless networks such as wireless ATM and GSM with high-speed data services continue to attract much research and development efforts. The major challenges on the physical and link layers in these networks include radio design, interference management, resource allocation and multiaccess protocol. Several papers on these issues are presented here. As the availability of radio spectrum is limited, there is always a desire to ''maximize'' the spectral efficiency, for example, by diligent (and perhaps dynamic) re-use of frequency and cell layout, while guaranteeing a certain quality of service (QoS). A number of papers at this workshop address these topics.

This book explores new analytical techniques and tools for the performance evaluation of distributed and integrated computer communication systems. The systems considered are those arising in LAN, MAN, WAN broadband ISDN, and ATM switching. These systems are mathematically modelled and analysed. Analytical results are presented on the basic queueing models such as multi-queue, priority queue, queueing network, queue with bursty input and superposed input, and multi-server queue. These results can be usefully applied for the performance evaluation of all the above systems.

Modeling and Simulation Environment for Satellite and Terrestrial Communications Networks: Proceedings of the European COST Telecommunications Symposium will be of interest to network designers, developers, and operators. This book is a collection of papers given at the European Cost Telecommunications Symposium. The Symposium was broken down into four sessions: Modelling and Simulation. Teletraffic Modelling. Communications Networks Simulation. Problems in Simulation. Each session addressed a wide spectrum of subjects. The symposium covered nearly all of the important aspects of simulation modeling and tools for the design and performance evaluation of communication techniques and systems. Emerging techniques were emphasized. Modeling and Simulation Environment for Satellite and Terrestrial Communications Networks: Proceedings of the European COST Telecommunications Symposium is a useful reference work for practicing engineers and academic researchers.

Twenty-four contributions, intended for a wide audience from various disciplines, cover a variety of applications of heavy-tailed modeling involving telecommunications, the Web, insurance, and finance. Along with discussion of specific applications are several papers devoted to time series analysis, regression, classical signal/noise detection problems, and the general structure of stable processes, viewed from a modeling standpoint. Emphasis is placed on developments in handling the numerical problems associated with stable distribution (a main technical difficulty until recently). No index. Originally published in 1995, Large Deviations for Performance Analysis consists of two synergistic parts. The first half develops the theory of large deviations from the beginning, through recent results on the theory for processes with boundaries, keeping to a very narrow path: continuous-time, discrete-state processes. By developing only what is needed for the applications, the theory is kept to a manageable level, both in terms of length and in terms of difficulty. Within its scope, the treatment is detailed, comprehensive and self-contained. As the book shows, there are sufficiently many interesting applications of jump Markov processes to warrant a special treatment. The second half is a collection of applications developed at Bell Laboratories. The applications cover large areas of the theory of communication networks: circuit switched transmission, packet transmission, multiple access channels, and the M/M/1 queue. Aspects of parallel computation are covered as well including, basics of job allocation, rollback-based parallel simulation, assorted priority queueing models that might be used in performance models of various computer architectures, and asymptotic coupling of processors. These applications are thoroughly analysed using the tools developed in the first half of the book.
