This text begins with the basic elements of education—curriculum, instruction, and policy—and examines how these core principles have been defined, refined, and applied in the name of teaching. Five essential questions—Who is an educated person? What is worth knowing? What is learning? What is good teaching? What is the place of the public school in society?—provide a framework for further consideration of the three central themes. In addition, print and non-print supplements, multiple points of view on controversial issues, and access to primary resource readings help students understand how theory relates to real-life teaching scenarios. Primary Source Readings boxes present primary source documents on a topic that is central to the chapter in which it appears. Each document is followed with questions, entitled "Thinking Critically About the Issues," that encourage students to analyze and develop an opinion about what they have just read. Voices of Principle and Promise boxes contain a first-person account of a topic that is critical to education and central to the chapter in which they appear. Chapter-ending pedagogy includes Applying What You've Learned application activities, Web Sites to Explore, and Questions for Reflection. Houghton Mifflin Video Cases, four- to six-minute video modules presenting real classroom scenarios, enable students to observe the day-to-day challenges and rewards of teaching from the convenience of their computers. Available on the Online Teaching and Study Centers, HM Video Cases are enhanced by classroom artifacts, Viewing Questions, Interview Transcripts, Key Terms, and bonus video footage.

The book of Exodus provides us with one of the most dramatic adventures of faith found in the Bible. During its forty fantastic chapters, we read about the enslavement of an entire race; a baby set afloat on the Nile River; a speaking shrub; a shepherd’s staff becoming a venomous snake; water transformed into blood; miraculous frogs; gnats, flies, and locus infestations; a death angel; a sea selectively parting for the good guys and swallowing up the bad guys; a seemingly unlimited supply of flat bread on the ground in the desert every morning; birds dropping in for dinner; water flowing out of a rock; and much, much more. The stuff God pulls off in Exodus is way better than anything Indiana Jones, Iron Man, or even a Jedi relying upon the force could possibly accomplish. Seriously, someone should consider negotiating a film deal with God. I really believe the story that unfolds in Exodus would be a blockbuster success. Wait, has someone already done that movie? As fun as it is to read this stupendous story, I want to make sure you don’t miss the primary reason God inspired this book to be included in the Bible. This intriguing, inspirational narrative is about faith; how God goes about preparing His people to carry out their intended work and warfare with reliance upon His presence, power, and provision. The purpose and possibilities of our partnership with God are the primary teachings conveyed through all the awesome Exodus adventures.

The most solemn, majestic, and beautiful gifts that Jesus Christ gave to the world are His sacraments. He endowed them with unprecedented and unparalleled power—power to change lives, save souls, and share God’s very life. The sacraments are the ordinary means by which God directs the course of each human life and all of world history. The Church celebrates seven sacraments: baptism, Eucharist, confirmation, matrimony, holy orders, confession, and anointing of the sick. Each was established by Jesus for the sake of salvation. When Jesus spoke of the sacraments, He made clear that they were essential: Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God (Jn 3:5) . . . unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you (Jn 6: 53). In Swear to God, Dr. Scott Hahn explores the richness of Christ’s sacraments—their doctrine, history, symbols, and rituals. Drawing upon the Bible and the Church’s tradition, he shows how God’s covenants—with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David—became the driving forces in history. When Jesus came to fulfill all these covenants, He established a new covenant, with greater power than ever before. Christians are God’s children now. Joined to Christ by baptism, we can already share in the eternal life of the Trinity, a life we hope to know fully in heaven. But heaven is with us, even now, in the sacraments.

Imagine a set of simple principles that could help you to understand how parts combine to become a whole, and how each part sees the whole from its own perspective. If such principles were any good, it shouldn’t matter whether we’re talking about humans on a team, birds in a flock, computers in a datacenter, or cogs in a Swiss watch. A theory of cooperation ought to be pretty universal, so we should be able to apply it both to technology and to the workplace. Such principles are the subject of Promise Theory, and the focus of this insightful book. The goal of Promise Theory is to reveal the behavior of a whole from the sum of its parts, taking the viewpoint of the parts rather than the whole. In other words, it is a bottom-up, constructionist view of the world. Start Thinking in Promises and find out why this discipline works for documenting system behaviors from the bottom-up.
