Takashi Homma Tokyo And My Daughter

This short and sweet--and astonishingly beautiful--book of photographs by the Tokyo-born and based Takashi Homma features 32 color images, primarily of the artist's daughter, although there are also some cityscapes and interiors that round out the story with perfect pitch. Homma offers an extremely well calibrated selection of images of his daughter from her first months to about age six: we see her sitting in her high chair; at a picnic; peeking through the car window; and taking some pictures of her own. Luminous, loving and relaxed, these portraits welcome the reader into the artist's inner world without giving anything away. "Tokyo and My Daughter," featuring one of the best family dog pictures ever, is published in the same series as Nieves' "Kim Gordon: Chronicles Vol.1, Mike Mills: Humans," and "Yukari Miyagi: Rabbit & Turtle." Homma has published his work in many international magazines and exhibited worldwide.

The book features Kawai's larger scale paintings, sculptural installations and snapshots of her working in her New York studio over the past two years. Born in Japan to and architect father and a mother who liked to sew and make puppets, Kawai seems to have abosorbed the talents of both of her parents in her own unique way. Since childhood she has enjoyed drawing, sewing, and making toys and dolls. She continues to employ these practices on a larger scale today, using, in her sculpture and installations, a riot of methods to make nearly every object appearing her miniature worlds. And although her mother's needlework was impeccable, Misaki favored a more haphazard handmade look. Kawai has had solo exhibitions around the world, including the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo ; and has been featured in shows at PS1 and Deitch Projects in New York. This open access book addresses a wide variety of events and technologies concerning the sago palm, ranging from its botanical characteristics, culture and use to social conditions in the places where it is grown, in order to provide a record of research findings and to benefit society. It discusses various subjects, including the sago palm and related species; differentiation of species of starch-producing palm; habitat, morphological, physiological and growth characteristics; culture and management; productivity of carbon dioxide; starch extraction and manufacture; characteristics and utilization of starch; and cultural anthropological and folkloristic aspects. Problems such as food shortages due to increasing populations, global warming and climate change, and decreasing reserves of oil and other underground resources, have become more pressing in recent years. In the context of these problems, the book examines the role of the sago palm in sustainable food production, in the manufacture of other foodstuffs, as a raw material for ethanol and in the manufacture of biodegradable plastics. Since 1995, Dutch photographer Hendrik Kerstens has been photographing his daughter, Paula. His photographs have since been collected by museums around the world. Hendrik Kerstens pictures Paula in relation to events in her own life as well as projecting onto her his fascination with the Dutch Master painters of the seventeenth century. Conceptually, Kerstens' photographs play with the dialogue between the mediums of painting and photography, with seriality, and time. His 'Paula Pictures' are reminiscent of Vermeer's painting. The austerity and clarity of the photographs, coupled with the serenity of the subject and the characteristic 'dutch' light all combine to create striking, beautiful and haunting works of art. However, Kerstens has never been interested in just imitating painting. As the series progressed, he became increasingly interested in the game of creating a conceptual and humorous dialog between past and present.

A former judge with a passion for history, Jean Sénat Fleury was born in Haiti and currently lives in Boston. In fact, he was responsible for the atrocities that the Japanese troops committed in Asia during the Pacific War. Japan's Empire Disaster is a book of information and training. The book describes Japan's opening to modernization with the 1853 arrival of commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry in the country, and also details the history of the wars launched by Emperor Meiji and Emperor Hirohito to build Japan's empire in the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries.
