Syntax And Morphology Of Yiddish Dialects

Der Faschismus des 20. Jahrhunderts hat die jüdische Kultur in Europa in ihrer ursprünglichen Form und Verbreitung weitgehend zerstört. Die Überlebenden brachten ihre Kultur in neue Umgebungen, wo sie teilweise wiederbelebt wurde. Auch die Sprachen fielen dem zum Opfer oder wurden im Zuge der Assimilation und Akkulturation aufgegeben oder zumindest durch die verschiedenen neuen Kontaktsituationen stark beeinflusst. Als in den 1950er Jahren absehbar war, dass viele Überlebende, die in den alten europäischen Territorien aufgewachsen waren, ihre Muttersprache nicht an ihre Kinder und Enkel weitergeben würden, erkannte Uriel Weinreich die Notwendigkeit und Chance, Sprache und Kultur dieser Sprecher systematisch zu dokumentieren. Im Rahmen seines Projekts 'Language and Culture Archive of Ashkenazic Jewry' (LCAAJ) sammelten 18 Interviewer zwischen 1959 und 1972 auf der Grundlage eines umfangreichen Fragebogens Interviews mit fast 1.000 Informanten. Das im Rahmen des LCAAJ gesammelte Material ist ein unerschöpflicher Fundus und die beste Quelle, die wir zu den historischen jiddischen Dialekten Mitteleuropas haben. Mit der Veröffentlichung der digitalisierten Kopien der schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen (Feldnotizen) durch die Columbia Libraries im Jahr 2018 wurden die Rohdaten des LCAAJ der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Zwischen 2017 und 2022 hat das Projekt 'Syntax of Eastern Yiddish Dialects' (SEYD) diese Feldnotizen im Hinblick auf syntaktische und auch morphologische Strukturen ausgewertet. Der vorliegende Band präsentiert eine Auswahl dieser Phänomene. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf den empirischen Daten sowie deren Einbettung in einen (mikro)typologischen Kontext. Eine Vielzahl von Karten veranschaulicht die räumliche Dimension der grammatischen Variation in den ehemaligen europäischen jiddischen Dialekten.

Yiddish Language Structures presents ten new studies on structural aspects of Yiddish in the light of modern linguistic theories which are of interest to linguists and philologists. The contributions are examples of data-based research. They address several levels of the language system including morphology, syntax and lexicology, and put special emphasis on mechanisms of internal and contact-induced language change spanning different epochs and societal and textual strata.

This book traces the origins of modern varieties of Yiddish and presents evidence for the claim that, contrary to most accounts, Yiddish only developed into a separate language in the 15th century. Through a careful analysis of Yiddish phonology, morphology, orthography, and the Yiddish lexicon in all its varieties, Alexander Beider shows how what are commonly referred to as Eastern Yiddish and Western Yiddish have different ancestors. Specifically, he argues that the western branch is based on German dialects spoken in western Germany with some Old French influence, while the eastern branch has its origins in German dialects spoken in the modern-day Czech Republic with some Old Czech influence. The similarities between the two branches today are mainly a result of the close links between the underlying German dialects, and of the close contact between speakers. Following an introduction to the definition and classification of Yiddish and its dialects, chapters in the book investigate the German, Hebrew, Romance, and Slavic components of Yiddish, as well as the sound changes that have occurred in the various dialects. The book will be of interest to all those working in the areas of Yiddish and Jewish Studies in particular, and historical linguistics and history more generally.

Modern research on dialects of the Yiddish language focuses in many instances upon Western Yiddish and the application of Yiddish dialectology to the study of older Yiddish and non-Yiddish monuments. The Second Oxford Winter Symposium on Yiddish Language and Literature reflects this trend and this collection of papers from the conference explores a wide range of contemporary research in the field.

This 2005 book was the first ever overview of all aspects of Yiddish language and lingustics.

For five hundred years scholars have been intrigued by the origins of Yiddish, the thousand year old language of Central and East European Jewry, and recently there has been a dramatic revival of both popular and intellectual interest. The Oxford Winter Symposium on Yiddish Language and Literature was the first academic conference devoted exclusively to the topic, and the greatest living Yiddish scholars are represented in this volume.

This book argues that syntactic parameters are set in a principled fashion on the basis of overt functional morphology. The main focus of the book is on the different positions of the finite verb in the Germanic SVO languages. In addition, other syntactic phenomena (null subjects, transitive expletive constructions and object shift) and other language families (Romance, Semitic and Slavic) are discussed. A common explanation for all of the discussed phenomena is proposed: If and only if the features for “person” are distinctively marked by the agreement morphology, the agreement affixes are listed separately in the lexicon and project phrases of their own in syntax where they attract the verb to the head positions and allow the specifier positions to be filled by various phonologically (un)realized elements. Special attention is given to issues of historical development and child language acquisition.

Max Weinreich's History of the Yiddish Language is a classic of Yiddish scholarship and is the only comprehensive scholarly account of the Yiddish language from its origin to the present. A monumental, definitive work, History of the Yiddish Language demonstrates the integrity of Yiddish as a language, its evolution from other languages, its unique properties, and its versatility and range in both spoken and written form. Originally published in 1973 in Yiddish by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research and partially translated in 1980, it is now being published in full in English for the first time. In addition to his text, Weinreich's copious references and footnotes are also included in this two-volume set.
