Our world is changing fast. Countries’ transport systems, which have long been shaped by project-by-project considerations, must help achieve higher-level goals for the well-being of mankind, as embodied by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. New forces impose greater effectiveness in the way public choices are made, such as making better use of data and technologies, adopting a more inclusive and participatory approach to decision making, and addressing social concerns about equity. Transport practitioners and country decision-makers have been looking for structured and coherent guidance about ways to adjust to these new dynamics and change the trajectory of transport system. This book examines the rationale for and details an innovative approach for public decision-making to expedite the pace to sustainable mobility.

But today, people are more attached to their smartphones than their cars. Cars are not always the quickest mode of travel in cities; and emissions from the rapidly growing number of cars threaten the planet. This book, by three experts from industry and academia, envisions a new world of mobility that is connected, heterogeneous, intelligent, and personalized (the CHIP architecture). The Private Sector Consultations paper recognizes that as transportation and related industries undergo fundamental changes-fiercer competition with new entrants, multiple exits of traditional actors, new business models, and rapid development of new technologies-change cannot happen without integrating inputs from both public and private actors. Onboarding the private sector in the SuM4All initiative was essential to convey the voice of the business and achieve a successful transformation of mobility. A business consultation, led by Michelin on behalf of the SuM4All Steering Committee, with support of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), Movin'On and Ernst & Young (EY), took the pulse of more than 25 large corporations covering the whole value chain comprising raw materials, transportation services, equipment, digital services, manufacturing, financing services, energy, and consulting. In addition to this, at the annual world summit on sustainable mobility in June 2019, Movin'On organized a special workshop in Montreal. This workshop, dedicated to the Global Roadmap of Action, offered the SuM4All initiative a unique opportunity to get direct outreach to business, and allowed corporations present at Movin'On to add their voice, thus enriching the consultation process. This paper summarizes the outcomes of these engagements.

Providing new insights into the relationship between transport and the environment, and the meaning of the concept of sustainable development for the transport sector, special attention is paid to the relationship between technological progress and policy. The different theoretical approaches are combined to create a strategy for R&D and the implementation of mega-technological innovations. After three decades of rapid economic growth, China became the world's second largest economy in 2010 after the United States of America. Along with the prospect of lifting millions out of poverty and improving living standards, China is facing yet new challenges of rapid urbanization. Recent research findings show that in 2012 urbanization rate was 52.6% in China (Lacy et al., 2013). It is predicted that by 2020 the number of megacities in China with an urban population of more than 10 million will increase to thirteen. Along with the increase in urban population and living standards there has been rapid increase of car ownership in China. It is estimated that there are more than five million vehicles in Beijing (Cheng, 2013; Economist, 2013). Large cities and prefecture-level cities already contributed 89.6% of China's total industrial CO2 emissions. One day in January 2013 air in Beijing was heavily polluted to a level of toxicity (smog) forty times the standard safe level set by the World Health Organization (Economist, 2013).At the international level, transport contributed 61.5% to world petroleum consumption and 22.3% to global CO2 emissions in 2010 (IEA, 2012). While the overall level of CO2 emissions in developed economies is stabilizing and in some cases declining, the levels in the developing and emerging economies are increasing. Large emerging economies with megacities will imminently become the major concerns of transport-related CO2 emissions. Without strategic innovations in the automotive industry and transport management system the current state of China's transport sector is not sustainable. The long-term sustainable solutions are likely to emerge from the interplay of economic, environmental, social and technological factors.The Special Issue, partnered with the Second International Symposium on Sustainable Mobility, focuses on the issues of developing policies and corporate strategies to help the automotive industry, transport management systems, and urban planning to embark on a sustainable path to future growth and development (WBCSD, 2007; World Bank, 2008).
