A number of relatively new technologies, such as Enterprise Resource Planning systems, the Internet and intranets, have entered the organizational landscape. These technologies have not only enabled a wide range of social and organizational transformations, but have also challenged much of the received wisdom that operates in academic and industrial discourses. This book brings a unique combination of years of experience in academics research and studies in regards to “ERP systems” with years of experience from a practitioner’s perspective. Each year billions of dollars are spend by organizations to implement, manage, and maintain ERP systems. This book is not a technical manual explaining all the nuts-and-bolts details of ERP that must be mastered to successfully implement the technology but is a guide to senior executives, managers, project managers, and project teams to understand the different aspects of an ERP project. An ERP project is far broader than the software technology and it is these other issues that can be the difference between success and failure. This book is based on 35 years of experience of the author, who has worked in organisations all over the world in various capacities and has project-managed ERP projects with varying degrees of success and failure and has analysed many ERP projects from a recovery, mediation and litigation perspective to determine the underlying reasons for ERP failure. The book is written in laymans terms and seeks to provide senior management, middle management, project management, and their project teams with an understanding of the issues that need to be addressed and managed in order to achieve a successful outcome from an ERP project.

Current evidence points to management accountants using traditional software (such as spreadsheets) for budgeting, ABC, balanced scorecards and other performance management techniques independent of, rather than integrated with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems. Complexities, and some outright failures, with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems implementation have been well documented. The work described in this book empirically validated a model offering a systematic approach for successful ERP project management and achievement of business performance goals. Data collected from 217 organisations was analysed using structural equation modelling. Results show the need, at the adoption stage, to carefully analyse organisational readiness and the expected strategic value and quality of the ERP system. At the implementation stage project management and training are most crucial for success. Understanding is needed of the synergies among certain factors that have multiple influences across the different project stages, and also of the impact of a number of factors that can have two-way effects, where one needs to determine in which direction the effect is stronger.

That is why having a secured, efficient and auditable system of record to store your data and be able to exploit that data via KPI’s Dashboards and reports becomes critical for your success. This book is not intended to teach experienced consultant how to implement their ERP. But rather to give the newcomers to the ERP world an insight of that they should do to implement a system successfully. This is not just my opinion, but because I used ChatGPT to write this book, the contents are what it is on the internet available already. I directly the information in order to give it a structure that made sense to me. Most implementation partners already have their own methodology, that is why this books is intended to companies that are planning to implement an ERP for the first time. Many companies put more focus in the Change Management, other ignore it completely. We can’t stress how important it is to have a Project Manager or at least one person responsible for gathering the data and preparing the data and to be the sole point of contact with the partner that is implementing the system with you.
