This book gathers the proceedings of the Seventh International Conference on Computational Science and Technology (ICCST 2021), held in Labuan, Malaysia, on 28–29 August 2021. The respective contributions offer practitioners and researchers a range of new computational techniques and solutions, identify emerging issues, and outline future research directions, while also showing them how to apply the latest large-scale, high-performance computational methods.

The phrase literature and environment only achieved popularity in recent decades, yet writers dating back to the explorers of the 1500s—and later such 19th-century Romanticists as Thoreau—have long been addressing environmental issues through literary expression. This volume introduces students and educators to the field by tracing the evolution of environmental writing in the United States. Chapters written by distinguished scholars offer new perspectives on important environmental issues, guiding readers through 11 carefully selected literary works. Each chapter provides brief biographical information on the author, discussions of the work's structural, thematic, and stylistic components, and insights into the historical context that relates the work to relevant environmental issues. Each chapter concludes with information on works cited. The analyzed works cover a wide spectrum of literature and span nearly 100 years. Included are early writings, such as Mary Austin's 1903 The Land of Little Rain, and famous groundbreaking works, such as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962) and Gary Snyder's Turtle Island (1974). Also included are frequently assigned works of special interest to students, such as The Monkey Wrench Gang (1975), The Earthsea Trilogy (1977), and Ceremony (1977). A list of selected further suggested readings completes the volume. Students of literature, as well as educators looking for new ways to present social issues, will find many ideas and much inspiration in this volume.

From stories about Los Angeles freeways to slave narratives to science fiction, environmental literature encompasses more than nature writing. The study of environmental narrative has flourished since the MLA published Teaching Environmental Literature in 1985. Today, writers evince a self-consciousness about writing in the genre, teachers have incorporated field study into courses, technology has opened up classroom possibilities, and institutions have developed to support study of this vital body of writing. The challenge for instructors is to identify core texts while maintaining the field's dynamic, open qualities. The essays in this volume focus on North American environmental writing, presenting teachers with background on environmental justice issues, ecocriticism, and ecofeminism. Contributors consider the various disciplines that have shaped the field, including African American, American Indian, Canadian, and Chicana/o literature. The interdisciplinary approaches recommended treat the theme of predators in literature, ecology and ethics, conservation, and film. Nevertheless, depending on the text one deals with, nature plays a vital role in understanding and analyzing literature.1 The present essay focuses on the views of nature in the short story "The De Wets come to Kloof Grange" by Doris Lessing.2 The Dictionary defines nature as "everything that exists in the world independently of people, such as plants and animals, earth and rocks, and the weather"3. Yet, in order to analyze nature in its literary context, it is important to point out that culture has a great impact on nature and its understanding.4 To analyze the view of nature, it is vital to recognize that the nature-culture distinction is not always absolute and clear cut.5 There is nature, and culture, and states partaking in both. Barry introduces the "outdoor environment [...] [as a] series of adjoining and overlapping areas which move gradually form nature to culture"6. To answer the question how nature is displayed within the story and hence to be able to draw a conclusion from these particular views of nature, different areas will be used to classify nature in its cultural context. Taking Barry's classification7 into account, the view of nature in the story "The De Wets come to Kloof Grange"8 will in the following be associated with three distinctive areas. Area one is referred to as the scenic sublime. It includes, for instance, forests, mountains and rivers. Moreover, there is area two, the countryside, which implies hills, fields, woods, etc. The greatest impact of culture can be found in area three, the domestic picturesque. It describes such things as parks and gardens.

From the late 1970s until the present day, the New Public Management movement flourished in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia and a number of other countries over the globe. Nowadays, governments across the world are more service-oriented than previously, and administrative system innovations are encouraging new ways of improving public services. Increasingly, more and more countries are witnessing administrative innovations to provide better, quicker, and more efficient and effective service to the public. To this end, this collection of essays highlights public service theory and practices. While some chapters concentrate on innovation in administrative systems, others pay attention to more theoretic and practical issues. A few examine municipal-level public service and innovation, whereas others focus on environment, community policing, public infrastructure, partnership governance, and e-service and e-participation, as well as citizen participation.
