The twelve articles in this volume promote the growing contacts between medieval linguistics and medieval cultural studies generally. Articles address medieval English linguistics, and the interrelation in Anglo-Saxon England between Latin and vernacular language and culture.

Studies of the very earliest form of language which can be called English, and its later influence. East Anglia - the easternmost area of England - was probably home to the first-ever form of language which can be called English. East Anglian English has had a very considerable input into the formation of Standard English, and contributed importantly to the development of American English and (to a lesser extent) Southern Hemisphere Englishes; it has also experienced multilingualism on a remarkable scale. However, it has received little attention from linguistic scholars over the years, and this volume provides an overdue assessment. Cecily Clark (1926-1992) is familiar to medievalists as editor of the Peterborough Chronicle; others will know her work in Anglo-Saxon, Anglo-Norman and Middle English studies, in particular her extensive researches in medieval English onomastics. She lectured at the universities of London, Edinburgh and Aberdeen before settling in Cambridge as Research Fellow of, successively, Newnham College and Clare Hall. She was past joint editor of Nomina, a Council member of the English Place-Name Society, and a member of the International Committee of Onomastic Sciences.

This text is the third installment of A Survey of Middle English Dialects 1290-1350. It is based on the spellings of place and personal names in the Lay Subsidy Rolls. The appearance of OE phonemes and sequences of phenomes is examined, the result being a delineation of the East Midland dialect area. The examination affords an approximate divide between the settlements of the Angles and the Saxons in Old English times. It also illustrates the original territory of the East Saxons, and throws light on the Anglo-Saxon invasion in prehistoric times.
