Studies On Decapoda And Copepoda In Memory Of Michael Turkay

This volume is dedicated to the memory of the eminent carcinologist Michael Türkay, of the Research Institute and Natural History Museum Senckenberg, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It is a tribute to his outstanding international contribution to the study of decapod crustaceans. An extensive account of Michael’s life and achievements is presented, along with thirty-one scientific papers by 62 of his friends and colleagues from around the world. The book’s focus is almost entirely on decapod crustaceans, and covers a variety of topics, including taxonomy, systematics, zoogeography, morphology, palaeontology, genetics, general biology and ecology. Numerous new taxa are described from a number of marine and freshwater groups, including one new genus and 13 new species named in honour of Michael himself. The contents of this volume were originally published in 2017 in Crustaceana volume 90, issue 7-10.

This volume is devoted to the memory of the Chinese carcinologist Prof. Ruiyu Liu (1922-2012) who dedicated his life to taxonomy, systematics, ecology, zoogeography and aquaculture. His scientific career started in 1949 with his first publications and continued.

The monograph contains new information about biodiversity, morphology and ecology in the model group of estuarine crustaceans, Eurytemora, widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. Several chapters treat questions on ecology and phylogeny related to marine species and time and place of origin of these calanoid copepod species.

This book describes how man-made litter, primarily plastic, has spread into the remotest parts of the oceans and covers all aspects of this pollution problem from the impacts on wildlife and human health to socio-economic and political issues. Marine litter is a prime threat to marine wildlife, habitats and food webs worldwide. The book illustrates how advanced technologies from deep-sea research, microbiology and mathematic modelling as well as classic beach litter counts by volunteers contributed to the broad awareness of marine litter as a problem of global significance. The authors summarise more than five decades of marine litter research, which receives growing attention after the recent discovery of great oceanic garbage patches and the ubiquity of microscopic plastic particles in marine organisms and habitats. In 16 chapters, authors from all over the world have created a universal view on the diverse field of marine litter pollution, the biological impacts, dedicated research activities, and the various national and international legislative efforts to combat this environmental problem. They recommend future research directions necessary for a comprehensive understanding of this environmental issue and the development of efficient management strategies. In the present new classification, the section Callianassida comprises two superfamilies, Axioidea and Callianassoidea, 19 families including one new family and two families with a new status, 8 subfamilies including one subfam. nov., 116 genera including 41 gen. nov. and 8 genera sensu nov., and 419 species including 12 spp. nov. and 2 nom. nov.

The classification of the mud shrimps of the superfamily Callianassoidea, currently including at least 3 families with 20 genera and 219 species, is revised. These shrimps are important agents in sea floor bioturbation, hence comprise a crucial factor in the ecology of neritic and benthic habitats as well as in processing near-shore pollutants.

This book introduces updated information on conservation issues, providing an overview of what is needed to advance the global conservation of freshwater decapods such as freshwater crabs, crayfish, and shrimps. Biodiversity loss in general is highest in organisms that depend on intact freshwater habitats, because freshwater ecosystems worldwide are suffering intense threats from multiple sources. Our understanding of the number and location of threatened species of decapods, and of the nature of their extinction threats has improved greatly in recent years, and has enabled the development of species conservation strategies. This volume focuses on saving threatened species from extinction, and emphasizes the importance of the successful implementation of conservation action plans through cooperation between scientists, conservationists, educators, funding agencies, policy makers, and conservation agencies.
