Studies Of Exotic Light Nuclei

For neutron-deficient nuclei, extension of the T/sub z/ = --3/2 series of strong beta-delayed proton precursors to 61Ge is discussed. For neutron-excess nuclei, heavy-ion induced, multi-nucleon transfer reaction studies of masses and energy levels of 2sld shell nuclei with T/sub z/ greater than or equal to 5/2 are covered. In addition, preliminary attempts to employ the (7Li, 2He) reaction for the latter studies are shown; a new detection system capable of observing unbound final states as reaction products is demonstrated via investigations of the (.cap alpha., 2He) reaction.

Since the mid-1980s increasing effort has been put into light exotic nuclei, that is light nuclei of unusual composition. The research of the exotic nuclei began with the advent of accelerated beams of such nuclei. This new technique has revitalized nuclear physics, and the facilities producing radioactive ion beams now offer opportunities for pion

The monograph describes the properties of the lightest nuclei with large excess of neutrons. The results of theoretical and experimental studies of neutron-rich isotopes with 1 ≤ Z ≤ 20 are presented while also changes in the structure of nuclei when going away from the line of β-stability are discussed. Information presented is on the mass, radii of distribution of nuclear matter, energy levels for excited states of these nuclei, the possibility of manifestation of a halo, as well as the deformation of nuclei and the quantum properties of ground states. The position of the boundary of nucleon stability for these nuclei is considered. The effects associated with weakening and even the disappearing influence of standard magic numbers and the appearance of new ones are discussed.The results presented in the book will be useful in other fields of science as well, including astrophysics.

This is the proceedings of the Ninth International Symposium on Exotic Nuclei EXON-2018, 10-15 September, Petrozavodsk, Russia. The first symposium took place 27 years ago in 1991 in Foros (Crimea), the later symposiums were held on Baikal Lake, in Peterhof, Khanty-Mansiysk, Sochi, Vladivostok, Kaliningrad and Kazan. The organizers of the Symposium were the five largest scientific centers of heavy-ion physics — JINR (Dubna), the RIKEN Research Center (Japan), the GANIL National Center (France), the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (Germany), the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (Michigan, USA). The main topics are: properties of light exotic nuclei, synthesis and properties of superheavy elements, rare processes and decays, experimental facilities and future projects.

Research with radioactive ion beams has entered a new era with the advent of energetic beams of radioactive nuclei able to induce nuclear reactions. The present book is the first volume of edited lectures based on material presented at the Euroschool on Exotic Beams over the past years. It introduces the graduate student and nonspecialist scientist from related areas to various topics encompassing theoretical, experimental as well as application-related aspects of this growing field of research.

This volume explores, explains, and supports the case for an advanced exotic beam facility from a theoretical perspective. The US nuclear physics community and the US Department of Energy are committed to building such a facility. The topics covered constitute a survey of present activities in nuclear theory that will set the challenges for an advanced exotic-beam facility and provide the starting point for interpreting experiments that will be conducted there.
