Excerpt from Studies in Hebrew Synonyms In English, as yet, comparatively little has been published. The Hebrew Review for 1835-36 contains some short but helpful notes. Valuable hints may be gained from the laborious lexicon 9 by Canon W. Wilson, Of Winchester, though his remarks cannot always be jus tified. The brochures of E. G. King 1 and A. W. Hands u are rather prefatory and inconclusive. But valuable results are given in the work Of Canon R. B. Girdlestone,12 despite undue deference shown to the Septuagint. Professor Moshe Bar-Asher, Professor Emeritus at the Hebrew University and long-time president of the Academy of the Hebrew Language, has published more than 200 articles and sixteen books and edited aboout 90 books and collections. The vast majority of his work has been accessible, however, only to specialists who read modern Hebrew or French. Bar-Asher’s groundbreaking articles on the dialects of rabbinic literature are classics. In more recent years he has brought the same breadth and depth of grammatical knowledge, and philological acumen, to the study of older classical Hebrew texts, including literary and epigraphic texts. This volume presents studies of individual words and verses within the Bible, as well as broader thematic discussions of biblical language and its long reception-history, down through medieval scribes and modern lexicographers. Also represented are Bar-Asher’s penetrating studies of Qumran texts and languages, which illuminate both the linguistic traditions reflected in these texts and the scribal culture from which they emerged. The third section contains studies of Mishnaic Hebrew. There are both sweeping surveys of the field and its accomplishments and challenges, and studies of specific phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical features.

Excerpt from Robertson's Compendious Hebrew Dictionary: Corrected and Improved Knowledge of the language, the most ancient learned Rabbins, as well as more modern Hebraists, have been divided in their Opinion. When we recollect, however, that such learned and renowned men, as Maimonides, aben-ezra, David Kimchi, Elias Levita, 8tc. Unhesitatingly assert the anti guity of the vowel points to be not only coeval with Ezra the scribe, but with Moses; nay, with the language itself; the modern Hebraist must be ahardy casuist indeed, who imagines that he caui invalidate the cogent arguments adduced by such learned Jews 1n favour of the antiquity as well as the necessity of the points to the attainment of a thorough knowledge of \the sacred language.
