Special Issue Mining The Digital Information Networks

Electronic publishing is continuously changing; new technologies open new ways for individuals, scholars, communities and networks to establish contacts, exchange data, produce information and share knowledge on a variety of devices, from personal computers to mobile media. There is an urgent need to rethink electronic publishing in order to develop and use new communication paradigms and technologies, and to devise a truly digital format for the future. This book presents the conference proceedings of the ELPUB 2013 conference, held in Karlskrona, Sweden, in June 2013. The main theme of the conference is extracting and processing data from the vast wealth of digital publishing, and the ways to use and reuse this information in innovative social contexts in a sustainable way. The conference brings together researchers and practitioners to discuss data mining, digital publishing and social networks, along with their implications for scholarly communication, information services, e-learning, e-businesses, the cultural heritage sector and other areas where electronic publishing is imperative. The book is divided into three sections: full research articles, full professional articles and extended abstracts. Each section is further subdivided into Data Mining and Intelligent Computing, Publishing and Access and Social Computing and Practices. Focusing on key issues surrounding the development of methods for gathering and processing information, and on the means for making these data useful and accessible, this book will be of interest to the whole digital community.

This book presents diverse contributions related to some of the latest advances in the field of personalization and recommender systems, as well as social media and sentiment analysis. The work comprises several articles that address different problems in these areas by means of recent techniques such as deep learning, methods to analyze the structure and the dynamics of social networks, and modern language processing approaches for sentiment analysis, among others. The proposals included in the book are representative of some highly topical research directions and cover different application domains where they have been validated. These go from the recommendation of hotels, movies, music, documents, or pharmacy cross-selling to sentiment analysis in the field of telemedicine and opinion mining on news, also including the study of social capital on social media and dynamics aspects of the Twitter social network.

Over the course of the last twenty years, research in data mining has seen a substantial increase in interest, attracting original contributions from various disciplines including computer science, statistics, operations research, and information systems. Data mining supports a wide range of applications, from medical decision making, bioinformatics, web-usage mining, and text and image recognition to prominent business applications in corporate planning, direct marketing, and credit scoring. Research in information systems equally reflects this inter- and multidisciplinary approach, thereby advocating a series of papers at the intersection of data mining and information systems research. This special issue of Annals of Information Systems contains original papers and substantial extensions of selected papers from the 2007 and 2008 International Conference on Data Mining (DMIN’07 and DMIN’08, Las Vegas, NV) that have been rigorously peer-reviewed. The issue brings together topics on both information systems and data mining, and aims to give the reader a current snapshot of the contemporary research and state of the art practice in data mining.

Driven by counter-terrorism efforts, marketing analysis and an explosion in online social networking in recent years, data mining has moved to the forefront of information science. This proposed Special Issue on Data Mining for Social Network Data will present a broad range of recent studies in social networking analysis. It will focus on emerging trends and needs in discovery and analysis of communities, solitary and social activities, activities in open for a and commercial sites as well. It will also look at network modeling, infrastructure construction, dynamic growth and evolution pattern discovery using machine learning approaches and multi-agent based simulations. The conferences on ‘Applications for Computers and Operations Research in the Minerals Industry’ (APCOM) initially focused on the optimization of geostatistics and resource estimation. Several standard methods used in these fields were presented in the early days of APCOM. While geostatistics remains an important part, information technology has emerged, and nowadays APCOM not only focuses on geostatistics and resource estimation, but has broadened its horizon to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the mineral industry. This book constitutes the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Networked Digital Technologies, held in Macau, China, in July 2011. The 41 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 127 submissions.
