This book provides an introduction to the glazed ceramic traditions of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam - their origins and distinctive stylistic and technical character - as well as a presentation of 313 fine pieces from the Collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Here, at last, is the massively updated and augmented second edition of this landmark encyclopedia. It contains approximately 1000 entries dealing in depth with the history of the scientific, technological and medical accomplishments of cultures outside of the United States and Europe. The entries consist of fully updated articles together with hundreds of entirely new topics. This unique reference work includes intercultural articles on broad topics such as mathematics and astronomy as well as thoughtful philosophical articles on concepts and ideas related to the study of non-Western Science, such as rationality, objectivity, and method. This book is published in conjunction with the exhibition of the James and Elaine Connell Collection at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco in late 1993. In addition to catalogue entries written by Nancy Tingley, it contains scholarly contributions by John Guy, John Shaw, and Louise Allison Cort on recent archaeological research at the Thai kiln sites, the role of Thai ceramics in maritime trade, and Japanese evidence concerning the dispersal and chronology of Thai ceramics.
