In these pages the writer makes an attempt to present some aspects of British rule in India from the angle of the ruled. I may add that I am fully aware and duly appreciative of the many solid advantages of English rule; and if I have not dwelt on those aspects of Indian administration it is because I have considered it more important just now to point out certain evils and suggest constructive re forms. The policy of repression which characterizes the modern regime is, I believe, doing much harm. For the sake of the Em pire responsible English statesmanship should give earnest con sideration to the betterment of conditions in India. The late Mr. M. G. Ranade has also left valuable records of his views on the same. And latterly M r. R. C. Dutt, by his Economic History of India' and other writings, has placed the Indian people under obligation. I may mention Mr. I). E.wacha, and the Hon: M r. G. K. We have also to expose many falsehoods that have been wilfully spread as truth by English writers.
