Soil Site Relations For Trembling Aspen Populus Tremuloides Michx In Northwestern Ontario

Ecological Land Classification (ELC) refers to the description of land resources at a range of spatial resolutions (i.e. global to local) and for a range of purposes or values. The emerging science of ELC is in fact a very carefully integrated blend of vegetation and earth sciences, climatology, cartography and ecology with a range of new technologies and methodologies including computer-based geographic information systems, remote sensing and simulation modelling. This publication defines the current `state-of-the-art' of ELC. It provides particular insight into the role of ELC in current and future forest resource planning and management, and emphasizes its application and usefulness at various spatial scales, for a variety of geographic locations, and under a range of management scenarios/constraints. The large aspen tortrix (Choristoneura conflictana) is an occasional defoliator of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) in western Canada. Research suggests that there might be a narrow phenological window for successful tortrix colonization of aspen buds in the spring. This paper adapts a stochastic model to describe the temporal relationship between C. conflictana and trembling aspen phenologies. The first characterization of the phenological stages occurring during bud-break and leaf expansion of trembling aspen is provided, as determined from observations at two sites in 1994. Degree-day models based on a common threshold temperature are developed for both insect and bud and shoot development of its host. The influence of changes in the sequence of temporal events on the success or failure of tortrix populations is also discussed.

Information about the biology, ecology, and management of quaking aspen on the mountains and plateaus of the interior western United States, and to a lesser extent, Canada, is summarized and discussed. The biology of aspen as a tree species, community relationships in the aspen ecosystem, environments, and factors affecting aspen forests are reviewed. The resources available within and from the aspen forest type, and their past and potential uses are examined. Silvicultural methods and other approaches to managing aspen for various resources and uses are presented.
