Complexity and Control in Team Sports is the first book to apply complex systems theory to 'soccer-like' team games (including basketball, handball and hockey) and to present a framework for understanding and managing the elite sports team as a multi-level complex system. The two authors are internationally known experts in the management and behaviour of football crowds and bring together for the first time over 30 years of research in this area from the disciplines of law and social psychology. Geoff Pearson is Professor of Law at The University of Manchester and Academic Director of the N8 Policing Research Partnership, UK. He was awarded his PhD on 'Legal Responses to Football Crowd Disorder' in 1999 and has published extensively on football crowd behaviour, policing, and law, largely utilising ethnographic research. In this area he has worked extensively with police forces, governing bodies, stakeholders, and policy makers and has contributed to several influential official reports and inquiries on the subject of football crowd disorder and regulation. Clifford Stott is Professor of Social Psychology at Keele University. He specialises in research on crowds, 'riots', 'hooliganism' and police use of force. He regularly works with police forces and governments internationally advising them on science led and dialogue-based approaches to public order management. In 2021 he was awarded an MBE for the contribution of his work to crowd psychology and in 2015 his work on policing crowds was acknowledged by the ESRC as one of its top 50 achievements in its 50-year history.

The book explores organized and spontaneous violence, both on the field and off, and calls for a much broader definition of ‘sports-related violence’, to include issues as diverse as criminal behaviour by players, abuse within sport and exploitatory labor practices. Offering a sophisticated new theoretical framework for understanding violence in a sporting context, and including a wide range of case-studies and empirical data – from professional soccer in Europe to ice hockey in North America – the book establishes a benchmark for the study of violence within sport and wider society. This book traces international developments in the hooligan phenomenon since the Heysel tragedy of 1985. The authors make special reference to the troubled European championships in West Germany in 1988 and look critically at political responses to the problem. The authors used ‘participant observation’ in their research on British fans at the World Cup in Spain, and at matches in Rotterdam and Copenhagen, and capture the authentic voice of football hooliganism in their interviews. In this analysis of patterns of football violence the authors suggest some short-term proposals for restricting seriously violent and disorderly behaviour at continental matches and put forward a long-term strategy to deal with the root causes of hooligan behaviour.
