The purpose of this dissertation is to explore current clinician guidelines for treating individuals with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders and their barriers to implementation. Several barriers such as training, education, and lack of financial resources pose obstacles for individuals with co-occurring disorders to receive adequate treatment targeting both disorders concurrently. Providers are increasingly encountering co-occurring disorders and often lack the resources to provide effective treatment. Treatment resources such as guidelines act as a tool to assist providers in treating dually diagnosed individuals rather than focusing only on one disorder or referring clients out. This disseftation aims to simplify the current guidelines published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA, 2020) to address the barriers to implementing these guidelines and serve as a more accessible resource for clinicians who treat individuals with co-occurring disorders.
