The slow discolouration and unattractive appearance of the tarnish that forms when silver is exposed to an atmosphere is an unfortunate consequence in silver jewellery. In order to evaluate the resistance of silver to tarnish, it is important to develop a test. This paper describes the development of an accelerated test to determine the tarnish performance of Sterling Silver.

Sterling Silver tarnishes easily in humid atmospheres, which is unattractive and highly undesirable. A variety of treatments and coatings were applied. These included polishes with anti-tarnish ingredients, lacquer, SAM coatings and electroplated coatings. However, none of these can be considered as an ideal protection for silver, and research continues.
