The names Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands indeed do require some clarifications. The former is the original name given to the entire Archipelago by Christopher Columbus at the time of his historic landfall in 1493. However, the qualifying word British, which is added to Virgin Islands, could be viewed as an adaptation mainly to differentiate between the British Virgin Islands and United States Virgin Islands. In official and constitutional references, the term Virgin Islands is utilized exclusively. However, in other contexts, the terms British Virgin Islands and Virgin Islands are used interchangeably. The explanation of these differences should suffice at this stage. For further and more detailed information, each name should be reviewed under its particular alphabetical placement. The text is arranged generally in direct alphabetical order. The various alphabetical entries deal with a variety of information, except two categories, which are integral parts of the Culture and Heritage of the Virgin Islands. These are August Festival Celebrations and also Boatbuilding and Sailing Legacies. The direct alphabetical arrangement will facilitate the utilization of the text.

Independent India wanted to build a modern, strong, dynamic, and self-reliant nation and embarked on the path of planned economic development. Growth, modernisation, self-reliance, and social justice are the basic objectives governing Indian planning. Dr. D. Swaminathans lecturers presented a clear view about Indias planning process. The need for effective cooperation between universities, industries, R&D national laboratories, and the national scientific and engineering associations and bodies has been well recognised for bringing relevance in higher and technical education and for indigenous technology development and sharing of resources. In this context, Swaminathan Model for University-Industry- National R&D LaboratoriesProfessional Bodies and Academies Interaction for Countrys Economic Development plays an important role.

Now an energy-rich sultanate, for centuries a important trading port in the South China Sea, Brunei has taken a different direction than its Persian Gulf peers. Immigration is restricted, and Brunei’s hydrocarbon wealth is invested conservatively, mostly outside the country. Today home to some 393,000 inhabitants and comprising 5,765 square kilometers in area, Brunei first appears in the historical record at the end of the 10th century. After the Spanish attack of 1578, Brunei struggled to regain and expand its control on coastal West Borneo and to remain within the trading networks of the South China Sea. It later fell under British sway, and a residency was established in 1906, but it took the discovery of oil in Seria in 1929 before the colonial power began to establish the bases of a modern state. Governed by an absolute monarchy, Bruneians today nonetheless enjoy a high level of social protection and rule of law. Ranking second (after Singapore) in Southeast Asia in terms of standards of living, the sultanate is implementing an Islamic penal code for the first time of its history. Focusing on Brunei’s political economy, history and geography, this book aims to understand the forces behind Brunei’s to-and-fro of tradition and modernisation.

Peter Mitchell, winner of the 1978 Nobel Prize for chemistry for his chemiosmotic theory, was a highly original scientist who revolutionized our understanding of cellular metabolism and bioenergetics. This is the only full biography of Mitchell, and it should be of considerable interest to biophysicists, biochemists, and physicians and researchers focusing on metabolism, as well as historians of medicine and biology.
