Download The Eighteenth Century in Sikh History Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The eighteenth century in Sikh history stands for a political revolution in which the erstwhile peasants and artisans who had joined the Khalsa order instituted by Guru Gobind Singh replaced first the Mughal and then the Afghan authority in the province of Lahore (Punjab). Based on a wide range of contemporary sources, the present study takes a fresh look at the political processes, and explores for the first time the accompanying transformation in the religious, social, and cultural life of the Sikhs. The aspects specifically taken up for study are the political resurgence of the Sikhs; their system of government; conception of God and the Guru; the institution of Gurdwara and the emergence of Amritsar as the premier centre of the Sikh world; rites, ceremonies, and ethics of the Khalsa; vertical and horizontal lines of demarcation among them; issues of caste and gender; literary articulation of the Sikhs; and their interest in art and architecture. A convergence of all these developments led to the crystallization of a distinctive Sikh identity by the end of the century. In a very real sense, the eighteenth century emerges in this book as a bridge between the earlier and later history of the Sikhs.

Download Sikh Ideology Polity, and Social Order Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
This book is the fourth 'incarnation' of essays published in 1972. A slightly revised edition appeared in 1982, and an enlarged one in 1996. The present edition is much enlarged and thoroughly revised. In many of these essays the author has analysed contemporary works of history and literature and all other essays are based strictly on contemporary evidence. In the volume as a whole Sikh ideology, polity and social order are seen from various perspectives to illumine their inter-relationship in all its richness and complexity. A variety of sources in Punjabi, Persian and English are used in these essays with reference to the 'received wisdom'. The volume, thus, is likely to provide the best introduction to the pre-colonial Sikh tradition for young researchers. The professional historians may find it useful for comparison in the light of their own understanding. The general reader would find it interesting especially as it brings out the essential significance of several contemporary works of literature. Indispensable for the teachers and students of Sikh history, this book has equal relevance for scholars of social sciences, religion and literature.

Download Historical Dictionary of Sikhism Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Sikhism traces its beginnings to Guru Nanak, who was born in 1469 and died in 1538 or 1539. With the life of Guru Nanak the account of the Sikh faith begins, all Sikhs acknowledging him as their founder. Sikhism has long been a little-understood religion and until recently they resided almost exclusively in northwest India. Today the total number of Sikhs is approximately twenty million worldwide. About a million live outside India, constituting a significant minority in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. Many of them are highly visible, particularly the men, who wear beards and turbans, and they naturally attract attention in their new countries of domicile. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Sikhism covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1000 cross-referenced entries on key persons, organizations, the principles, precepts and practices of the religion as well as the history, culture and social arrangements. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Sikhism.

Download Studying the Sikhs Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
This basic guide and resource book targets four fields--religious studies, history, world literature, and ethnic or migration studies--in which Sikhism is now receiving greater attention. The authors explain the problems of studying and interpreting Sikhism, and opportunities for integrating Sikh studies into a broader curriculum in each field. They also provide a sense of the Sikh community's own approach to education, and evaluate materials and approaches at the North American university level. Included are a sample syllabus with an explanatory essay, a bibliographical guide, a glossary, and a general bibliography. Gurinder Singh Mann's review of his course on Sikhism is an effective mini-guide to the field as a whole.
