Negative emotions are familiar enough, but they have rarely been a topic of study in their own right. This volume brings together fourteen chapters on negative emotions, written in a highly accessible style for non-specialists and specialists alike. It starts with chapters on general issues raised by negative emotions, such as the nature of valence, the theoretical implications of nasty emotions, the role of negative emotions in fiction, as well as the puzzles raised by ambivalent and mixed emotions. The second part of the volume consists of studies of specific emotional phenomena, ranging from the emotion of being moved and the sense of uncanniness to jealousy, hatred, shame, contempt, anxiety, and grief.

In this original, wide-ranging, and endlessly thought-provoking work of popular nonfiction, a leading science writer uncovers the pervasive presence of shadows in our world. For Plato, shadows were the symbol of our limitations. For Galileo, they knocked the Earth from the center of the cosmos. They are a source of fear and a symbol of ignorance, and they loom large in art and design, mythology and folklore, physics and metaphysics, and architecture and urban planning. From shadows puppets and the psychology of shadows to the role of shadows in astronomy and the influence of shadows on the architectural profiles of our cities, Roberto Casati awakens our fascination in this tour-de-force of investigation and imagination.

Never make a deal with a fae, they say. But sometimes there’s no choice, consequences be damned. As daughters of the Amadis royal family, my twin Brielle and I should have been helping our people rebuild civilization after the War of Armageddon. Instead, our mother does the unthinkable, possibly sparking a new war, and we’re whisked away to another realm to hide us from our enemies. When we return home, we discover our parents are missing, our people have scattered, and every faction hunts the Knight twins. Some are obsessed with claiming our formidable power for themselves. Others simply want us dead. Still, I can’t believe we’re home for less than a day when I end up as Winter Court’s prisoner in Faery. And it only gets worse from there. To protect my sister, I’ve made a deal with a fae that shatters any hopes for my own future. A dark prince ignites something in me that feels all wrong and oh, so right. And then there’s the enchanting princess I ache for . . . yet can never have. Foes become allies, friends become traitors, and one truth emerges with clarity: war is imminent. My only hope to protect everyone I love is to harness the dark power within me—a force that can save worlds or annihilate us all. If I fail to control it, someone else will. But to master it, I must face my most daunting opponent yet—myself. Everything in our solar system casts a shadow. The Earth, the moon, and the planets cast a shadow. The only thing that does not cast a shadow is the sun. The sun shines its light on one half of the planets, while the other half is in the shade of its own shadow. All living and non-living things expose only half of themselves to the light of the sun. Their other half remains in its shadow. Plants and animals are born with a shadow, live with a shadow, and must die with a shadow. Man is born with a shadow; however, he does not have to live and die with a shadow like the rest of the living creatures. He can choose to stay confined within the shadows of earthly things or go beyond the shadows to become something like the sun. But this quest takes a little something extra than most ordinary men seem to look for or even believe is possible to achieve. Early on in childhood, Fr. Peterson wanted to fly. Little did he know that his innocent desire to fly was an extraordinary, shadowless thing called prayer. A real and very extraordinary ear heard his plea. So God s heart, the only one in nature who produces no shadow, was moved to help show him how to go beyond the shadows of worldly things, frightful things, and even deadly things.
