Winner, 2017 Ned Shank Award for Outstanding Preservation Publication from Preserve Arkansas Shadow Patterns: Reflections on Fay Jones and His Architecture is a collection of critical essays and personal accounts of the man the American Institute of Architects honored with its highest award, the Gold Medal, in 1990. The essays range from the academic, with appreciations and observations by Juhanni Palaasma and Robert McCarter and Ethel Goodstein-Murphree, to personal reflections by clients and friends. Two of Arkansas’s most accomplished writers, Roy Reed and Ellen Gilchrist, who each live in Fay Jones houses, have provided intimate portrayals of what it’s like to live in, and manage the quirks of, a “house built by a genius,” where “light is everywhere. . . . Everything is quiet, and everything is a surprise,” as Gilchrist says. Each of these Analysing Architecture Notebooks is devoted to a particular theme in understanding the rich and varied workings of architecture. They can be thought of as addenda to the foundation volume Analysing Architecture, which first appeared in 1997 and has subsequently been enlarged in three further editions. Examining these extra themes as a series of Notebooks, rather than as additional chapters in future editions, allows greater space for more detailed exploration of a wider variety of examples, whilst avoiding the risk of the original book becoming unwieldy. Shadows may be insubstantial but they are, nevertheless, an important element in architecture. In prehistoric times we sought shade as a refuge from the hot sun and chilling rain. Through history architects have used shadows to draw, to mould form, to paint pictures, to orchestrate atmosphere, to indicate the passing of time ... as well as to identify place. Sometimes shadow can be the substance of architecture.

The Body is very often the personification of this shadow of the ego. Sometimes it forms the skeleton in the cupboard, wrote Carl Jung, and everybody naturally wants to get rid of such a thing. Through the symbolism of illness and physical symptoms, our bodies reflect the darkness and the light the shadow holds for us until we are ready to accept it. It is the shadow-face of our souls that holds the light and the darkness until we are strong enough to face and heal what we have previously denied or rejected about ourselves. Our bodies and their ailments are not our enemies, and neither are our shadows. The shadow reveal the negative ego patterns we had previously rejected or denied, through the messages of our illnesses, so we can recognize, forgive, and heal them. The shadow is the ally of our true self and the enemy of our negative egos.
