Excerpt from Lectures and Sermons In addition to the above, Dr. Davidson left many written addresses at fencing the tables, previous to the celebration of the Lord's Supper; addresses at the table; notes of exposition of the Confession of Faith; and of continuous portions of the Scripture at the weekly prayer meetings, held on Thursday evenings during the greater part of his ministry. From such a mass it would have been difficult, and no attempt has been made by a perusal of the whole, to make a proper selection. In making a selection, regard has been had to the impressions which particular discourses made at the time on the minds of his ordinary hearers, and to the occa sions on which Dr. Davidson afterwards preached them. But after the selection was made, it was found that many of those selected had to' be reserved, in order that the present publica tion should not extend beyond one volume. Those now published are specimens of Dr. Davidson's ordi nary pulpit ministrations, from the time of his translation to the West Church in May 1836 to the end of 1870, and they are arranged in the order of their dates. Excerpt from Divine Healing Sermons Unto the sick and the suffering, whose weary, thorn-pierced feet have trod affliction's rugged path: unto the weak who have need of strength, and unto the strong whose heart would fain be skilled in faith to render succor to the weak, this book is loving ly dedicated in the Name of Him who gave Himself for us and by Whose stripes we are made whole. Day and night I have but to close these eyes of mine to see again, through misty tears, the drawn, white, pain-blanched faces of the afflicted of my people. One moment I am all a-weeping for the multitudes shut outside the crowded doors and for the thousands we could never reach, though we toiled day and night. Excerpt from The Divine Paraclete: A Short Series of Sermons Upon the Person and Office of the Holy Ghost Who draws true souls to Himself more and more. The world of faith is His kingdom, where the realities of divine revelation are felt and appreciated. By Him we are taken out of the world of sense, and taught to live the true life which is in God. To Him we owe all our supernatural being, from its first beginning to its glorious end. Deep should be our gratitude and ardent our devotion to this blessed Spirit, by whose breath we are new born, and by whose strength our souls are made meet for the inheritance of light. The whole economy of grace is found in this devo tion, and in the knowledge which flows from it. The church, with all its gifts, is the sphere of the sanctifying energy of the Holy Ghost and no one can properly believe in the person and office of the divine Paraclete who does not receive the Catholic Church as the body of Christ, and enter by the open door.
