This is the account of the experiences of a farm boy from the western prairie and a girl from the Bronx. These two spent 35 years in Japan. No two societies could be more different This is the story of their struggle to understand, their mistakes, the humorous situations they find themselves in, all against the background of the American occupation and the Korean conflict next door. It contrasts American and Japanese life and tells the story of many courageous Japanese and their response to life situations. It tells of their being ushered in to meet the Emperor and of his kind words of thanks. It is the account of the trip from culture shock to true bi-cultural living.

"Anyone want to go to Japan and teach English for a half a year?" That's how it all started. I was 38 years old, and a returning student in a Master's Degree in English program. The bulk of this book is a daily journal/blog of my adventures while getting TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certified and my trip to Japan, where I taught English to students of all ages. I did a lot of things right, and I also did a lot of things in the most difficult way imaginable. I'd never traveled outside the USA before, and spoke nearly no Japanese when I started. This book has it all, exciting adventures traveling to far-off cities, misadventures on mountaintops, and even the occasional rant. There's good and bad, but it's all real, and written when it happened. If you've ever considered going overseas to teach or just are curious about what it's like to live there as an American, this book is for you. I went to Japan, but many of the problems and situations I came across would be the same anywhere. I discuss the stresses of getting trained in a university-level TEFL course, getting over there, learning my way around, and getting through day-to-day life in my new world. I discuss what's happened, what I think it meant, and the people I encountered while doing it.

Most books about Japan will tell you how to use chopsticks and say "konnichiwa!" Few honestly tackle the existential angst of living in a radically foreign culture. The author, a three-year resident and researcher of Japan, tackles the thousand tiny uncertainties of living abroad. -- Adapted from back cover

In this international bestselling thriller, a former teacher delivers her final lesson to her students—including the two children that murdered her daughter. After calling off her engagement in the wake of a tragic revelation, Yuko Moriguchi had nothing to live for except her only child, four-year-old child, Manami. Now, following an accident on the grounds of the middle school where she teaches, Yuko has given up and tendered her resignation. But first she has one last lecture to deliver. She tells a story that upends everything her students ever thought they knew about two of their peers, and sets in motion a diabolical plot for revenge. Narrated in alternating voices, with twists you'll never see coming, Confessions probes the limits of punishment, despair, and tragic love, culminating in a harrowing confrontation between teacher and student that will place the occupants of an entire school in danger. You'll never look at a classroom the same way again.

The Companion Encyclopedia of Asian Philosophy is a unique one-volume reference work which makes a broad range of richly varied philosophical, ethical and theological traditions accessible to a wide audience. The Companion is divided into six sections covering the main traditions within Asian thought: Persian; Indian; Buddhist; Chinese; Japanese; and Islamic philosophy. Each section contains a collection of chapters which provide comprehensive coverage of the origins of the tradition, its approaches to, for example, logic and languages, and to questions of morals and society. The chapters also contain useful histories of the lives of the key influential thinkers, as well as a thorough analysis of the current trends.
