Sketches, drawings, and scribbles from the private letters and notebooks of some of the greatest names in history--notable figures in art and literature, fashion and film--revealing that even the most influential minds have doodled their time away! From the first ever sketch of the Red Cross logo by its founder Clara Barton to a cartoon scrawled on a love letter from Charles Bukowski, the objects in this fascinating collection are a perfect reflection of the eclectic and storied cast of characters from whose archives they've been collected over the years. Organized alphabetically, with a range of influential names, from William Burroughs to Mark Twain, the book is a voyeur's treasure trove of the ephemeral, in which cultural icons reveal their own preoccupations, passions, plans, and distractions in the marginalia of their daily correspondence. A satirical sketch by Marc Chagall sits beside a quick self-portrait by Charlie Chaplin; a throwaway drawing on a dollar bill by Joan Miro follows the first ever idle iteration of Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren; and a hasty drawing by Andy Warhol precedes a sketch of Falstaff on a hotel notepad by Orson Welles. A treat for lovers of the analog in the digital age, and reproduced beautifully on uncoated paper to come as close as possible to the texture of the originals, Scrawl connects high and low, art and science, history and literature, youth and age, with the universal truth of doodling.

You draw with me, and I'll draw with you! Those battling cartoon-artists from Scribbles and Ink are back, this time hosting a bright and funny "let's draw it together" activity book. Scribbles, the cat, and Ink, the mouse, invite two kids (or a kid and a grown-up, etc.) to tap into each other's creativity. On each spread, a silly sentence about a silly subject accompanies a space where the partners can draw. While there's helpful instruction, no exact result is demanded. The open-ended approach, coupled with subject matter such as robots, rock stars, monsters and monkeys, will draw kids into the fun to be found at the end of a pencil.

A sketch . . . records something that happens between the artist and the object. Now closer to the artist, now closer to the object, but still hanging in the tension in between. Or the memory or recall of that tension. A composite of line, scratches, smears, swabs and dots that recreates an object, it learns its rhythm in the process. And becomes an object by itself. The artist sometimes keeps it to the essentials; at other times he dresses it up and makes it play a role. Set sail a narrative. And take one to new shores of experience. This uncovers new images. So this ceaseless doodling; the unravelling of what is, then its reknitting into novel composites. This volume of sketches, scribbles, drawings spans the work of the last 30 years, with the bulk of the material coming from the period between 1980 and the present. The selection has been put together by the artist himself, with the aim of compiling a definitive collection. This volume includes his early sketches from 1968, the black-and-white drawings for his reverse paintings from 1980, his China, Japan, London and Oxford sketches, drawings of nature, and figure studies. It provides a rich variety of mediums and styles, from works in crayon and watercolour to pen and ink scribbles, brush drawings, notes, doodles and working drawings. The volume opens with a thoughtful introduction by K. G. Subramanyan, reflecting on the importance and purpose of such sketches and drawings for an artist, and looking back on his experiences over a long and eminent career. There is also a substantial biographical sketch prepared by art historian and close associate R. Siva Kumar, who has observed K. G. Subramanyan s oeuvre over the years. A leading artist, theoretician and teacher, K. G. Subramanyan is Professor Emeritus at Kala Bhavan. He lives and works in Santiniketan.
