"Riddles, Rhyme and Alliteration" is an activity-based resource that encourages children aged 4-7 years to concentrate, listen to and discriminate between different speech sounds. Teachers can use the material separately or as part of a phonics programme, as each activity has the flexibility to be used with individuals, groups or whole classes. Older children who have listening and auditory discrimination difficulties, poor listening skills, and mild to moderate hearing loss or 'glue ear' can also benefit from using the material. Each of the eighteen sections is based on a particular phoneme and includes two or three pages of illustrations to accompany the activities.The activities are photocopiable and include: riddles which can be solved with the help of the picture pages; exercises on alliteration and rhyming words; tongue twisters; a story containing words beginning with the target phonemes; and a puzzle worksheet based on some of the words from the picture pages. This collection of thirteen chapters answers new questions about rhyme, with views from folklore, ethnopoetics, the history of literature, literary criticism and music criticism, psychology and linguistics. The book examines rhyme as practiced or as understood in English, Old English and Old Norse, German, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Karelian, Estonian, Medieval Latin, Arabic, and the Central Australian language Kaytetye. Some authors examine written poetry, including modernist poetry, and others focus on various kinds of sung poetry, including rap, which now has a pioneering role in taking rhyme into new traditions. Some authors consider the relation of rhyme to other types of form, notably alliteration. An introductory chapter discusses approaches to rhyme, and ends with a list of languages whose literatures or song traditions are known to have rhyme.

True riddles or punning ones with a word of two uses are very popular, i.e. "What runs but never walks? - A river."1 Although they are regarded as special forms funny puzzles, enigmas and sayings were also an important element of poetic diction throughout the history of literature. Old English prose and verse are considered to be the oldest literature written in vernacular, although Latin and Germanic influence is apparent in the Old English language. During the Anglo-Saxon Period and especially under Alfred, King of Wessex, Old English language and poetry reached its highpoint. At this time the clergy was considered as the intellectual elite and so poetry was composed in monasteries and the so called "writing-rooms". The surviving manuscripts include heroic, elegiac and religious elements, as in the Beowulf poem, The Seafarer and The Dream of the Rood. Old English riddles can be found in The Book of Exeter anthology. The collection includes about ninety riddles with heroic, religious and philosophical elements. This special form of poetic diction provides characteristic stylistic devices like alliterative verse and kenning. Besides that, the enigmas had a didactic purpose, as they were intended for religious and linguistic learning at the monastery schools.
