Excerpt from Returns of the Railroad Corporations in Massachusetts, 1859: Together With an Abstract of the Same The Joint Standing Committee on Railways and Canals, to which was referred the Annual Returns of the several Railroad Corporations in operation within the Commonwealth, Report: That returns have been made by thirty-seven corporations. The Hampshire and Franklin Railroad Company, which made its second report to the last Legislature, has made no report the present year; and reports have been made by the Framingham Branch Railroad Company, the Newburyport Railroad Company, and the Stockbridge and Pittsfield Company, to the present Legislature for the first time. The Newburyport Company has made considerable progress in its undertaking. The Framingham Company has organized merely, no contracts for the road having yet been made. The Stockbridge and Pittsfield Company's return did not reach the committee until the seventeenth of February, and it will not appear in its place among the returns. It contains none of the statistics which the law requires, and merely states that the company has been organized, a location made, forty-four hundred shares subscribed for, and the road put under contract, to be finished by the first day of June, 1850, for the sum of four hundred forty thousand dollars.
