Transition to Parenthood moves beyond a one-study focus and captures multidisciplinary work on all families making the transition to parenthood. The book covers societal trends, changes, and most importantly expectations. Focus is also placed on how families are impacted by their surroundings and their individual members. Strengths and limitations of current theories are discussed, as well as how the phenomenon of parenthood requires a combination of both macro- and micro-level theories.

Download The Influence of Postpartum Depression on Relationship Satisfaction Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
A large body of literature has established that parents experience small to moderate declines in relationship satisfaction across the transition to parenthood (Mitnick, Heyman & Smith Slep, 2009). Yet, the current literature is surprisingly lacking in factors to explain this decline. One potential risk factor is postpartum depression (PPD). Although many studies have established a concurrent association between relationship satisfaction and PPD (where relationship satisfaction is specified as the predictor; Beck, 2001), and a few have examined the longitudinal association between prior relationship satisfaction and subsequent postpartum depression (e.g. Hock, Schirtzinger, Lutz, & Widaman 1995), no studies have systematically examined PPD as a predictor of relationship satisfaction during the transition to parenthood. Based on the Actor Partner Interdependence Model (Cook & Kenny, 2005), the current study utilized dyadic, longitudinal, and person-centered methods to examine the influence of PPD on relationship satisfaction in a sample of 104 couples making the transition to parenthood. Results of structural path models and a latent class growth analyses suggest PPD is a significant, negative predictor of relationship satisfaction during the transition to parenthood. Furthermore, these results stress the interdependence of couples' PPD and relationship satisfaction during the transition to parenthood.
