Excerpt from Registrum Magni Sigilli Regum Scotorum: The Register Of The Great Seal Of Scotland, A. D. 1424-1513 On my appointment as editor in 1878, the draught abridgment was placed in my hands with general directions to subject it to the closest and most minute revision and comparison with the record, and to endeavour to curtail it still further in order to the production of an abbreviate as accurate and concise as possible. In carrying this into effect, it was found to be the most satisfactory course to make the abridgment anew from the record, following with certain modifications the form adopted by Mr. Thomson, and taking full advantage of the labours of my predecessors wherever no change was found to be necessary.
